I estimate a 85% attrition. It really isn't TMC's fault.

Say there are 20 newbs when u start. You will lose about 3 for hot urine or physicals. 2 will go home during orientation because they miss their mommy, wifey, and or kiddy (Like my roommate). 2 will get the boot because he/she is a jackass; the ones that everone hates - the Billy BigRig. 2 will score an average F minus on their written tests. 2 will lie on their application and get caught. That leaves 9. 2 will quit during training, after they get into their truck 2 will quit because it wasn't what they expected. That leaves 5. 2 will do sometjing so stupid or illlegal that TMC has to eject them. 3 will be there at the end of the year.

Sadly, TMC's attrition is way better than the average trucking company.

First. The steel PFT trailers are either sold or sent to Laredo to be used there. They don't have strap winches on them and you have to mount them as needed.

thanks
Mudflap276.... you are too far away from the dedicated accounts in Texas but you are in a good area for Texas Dedicated which is based in Sweetwater.
The Dedicated accounts included
Tamko Shingles (Dallas), Owens Corning shingles (Dallas), Lowes (Ennis), Weyerhouser (Dallas and Wright City, OK), Houston regional, GP (Acme).
I know I may have forgotten a few in Texas, but I know a driver from Waco that has been with TMC for 6 years and he would also prefer a dedicated deal that would get him home every night but was told that he was too far away from those accounts.
If anyone knows of more in Texas let me know.

One more thing about trailers in Texas. We have a bunch of Wilsons that we inherited when we bought KTL. Some of these are good trailers. Atleast they have boxes unlike the new Fontains that they are bringing here. The Fontains add 1000lbs to our trucks and we can't do the extra weight w/o a permit especially for loads out of Rotan. We use the Wilsons and Fontains as Drop/Hook trailers in sweetwater and Rotan.

JBenson,

If you're 56, i'm not feeling too nervous about being 59. Never drove a truck in my life, but I'm waiting for word on Monday if TMC will approve my application. I'm in good physical condition, 5'7", 180 pounds--hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew, but I don't want to spend a year working up to .34 per mile. I'm used to making $40k to $50k and need to continue that income level.

Any advice from you veterans will be greatly appreciated. TMC seems like a good company, with good opportunities, according to my research.

Once we were on the highway, he offered some guidance on using the Vorad system to help avoid traffic problems ahead.

And he wants to schedule the showers and meals regularly, but let's me make the decision. For example, we were driving from Connecticut to Delaware in the afternoon. I knew I would have to take the George Washington bridge in NYC, so I said "NO WAY" to the early dinner and shower he wanted to do in CT. I told him I wanted to keep the wheels rolling until we got to New Jersey or Delaware, then we could get some food.

If I'm driving too fast (in Illinois, for instance), he will subtly mention the truck speed limits, but say that it is my decision on how fast to run.

Due to the short week for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I am going to request an additional week of training. Both my trainer and training coordinator said that is OK with them and it is my decision.

I'm 56 so some of our customers who saw me asked the trainer if he was bringing along his father. Tarping is not as bad as some people mention. The only problem I've run into is when the tarp and straps freeze on the truck. They are much more difficult to roll up when frozen.

I'm home every night and got that job with just 5-6 months experience here at TMC.

I don't know SQUAT about Texas. Too far off the beaten path for me, but I do know that quite a FEW of the accounts TMC has the dedicated go-ahead for are currently dedicated accounts run by another company (can't tell ya WHO) so that is akin to "taking over" that company without inheriting their $hitty equipment. I guess you'd call it a "hostile takeover". lol
As far as slow, here in Kearny NJ we're still humming like a well oiled machine. I'm QUITE busy.
