:sad: There was a bad accident on the I-90 this morning around 5:30 am. It involved a flatbed from a company called Pitman. It looked as if it occurred at the on ramp from the rest area heading west bound.

The truck was alright but a SUV ran into the trailer and two people are dead.
We drove past it this morning a reminder of how careful and watchful we all need to be.

I know that System Transport does allot of runs to Seattle and that goes through the Snowqualmi (SP) Pass which is bad allot of times if there is any snow.

It is all a learning experience hopefully the right lessons are learned!

First let me say I've read all of your posts and have been rooting for you for awhile. I know I shouldn't open this can of worms, but do you really tell him how/when to drive his truck? If he thought the weather was bad enough to sit, who are you to tell him to chain up and go? He was there, you weren't, shouldn't it be his call? Really, is the money more important than his safety? I don't blame him for being annoyed, I would have been more than a little annoyed!

Maybe I'm off base, but that's how this came across, to me anyway.

First of all I want to thank you for rooting for us!

As far as safety issues I would not want him to drive if he felt it was unsafe. I felt more of a sense of not wanting to chain up. His trainer at Davis Transport had the philosophy of not ever chaining up. He said if the roads were bad enough to chain up he would shut it down and wait it out.

The weather was not bad it was that the pass required chains. If the weather was severe and there were safety issues I would not even think about suggesting that he should have chained up or even drive but I think it was an issue of not wanting to chain and hoping they would lift the restriction more than anything.

This philosophy under the circumstances will not work with the short runs he will be getting at times with System Transport.
This may work when you haul loads that are going 2000-3000 miles but when you are having loads that are 280-300 miles through areas that frequently require chains this is not going to work.

Of course as I said if it comes to a safety issue whether it is adverse conditions of any kind I think he should always pull it over until he feels it is safe to drive.

well my philosify is only to chain to get out of trouble...not to go looking for it...lol

but i can do that as i usaully do alot longer runs....

glad to hear hubby is doin good.....i really hope he likes it there

I should have clarified it better in the first place! I should have stated that he said there was not bad driving weather and it was just the pass.

We both have had our share of chaining up with our driveway! Now with my four wheel drive and studs I do not have to chain up just to get up the driveway. I use to have to do it twice a day! :sad: Usually in the winter he will use my vehicle since his is not in use at all right now. So I can understand his dislike of chaining!

Last year he was very fortunate driving with Davis the waiting method worked almost every time and he still got there on time or early!

He will come around regarding the need to sometimes chain it is just one of those chores that you really hate to do. Who knows maybe he will get lucky this year and the passes up here will be clear every time he gets a load through them but if that happens I think it will be luck if runs those passes allot.

Update on the Accident

The accident that occurred on the I-90 was caused because the people in the car were doing 60 mph and they said it was too fast for the weather conditions! The car went into a slide.

The Pitman Truck was parked on the shoulder of the rest stop area heading West bound as the rest stop and more than likely the truck stops around were full. He was told it was alright to park there.

The car slid into the back of his trailer actually under the flatbed. He was hauling steel pipes.

The two people in the SUV died. Poor driver what a way to start your day :shock:

I understand the dislike of chaining! Sometimes if the weather is not bad and it is only the passes it may be safer to chain and run them while chains are still required as the 4*4's slow down or take it a little slower when they see big trucks with chains!

With those long runs though you can still make up good miles the next day!

Are you still in Oklahoma? Glad you got out of Texas! I am sure you are also.

:sad: My husband is a little bummed! He dropped his load in Ephraim Utah and picked up a load in Provo Utah this load will be going to Portland. He was looking forward to coming home this weekend as he was told or lead to believe in the heavy haul division he would have weekends off.

It will be an approximately 885 mile run. Home would have been about a hundred miles less! He is hoping that this is an exception and not the normal protocol with System Transport as he said this evening it was not what he signed up for. The OTR guys are home every 10-14 days and generally have more miles, less tarping.

His main purpose for signing onto the heavy haul was so he would be home on weekends!
