Walmart Makes Big Play for Truck Drivers

The trucking industry has asked continuously over the past few years, “How do we attract new drivers?” This question has only gotten more pressing as supply chain disruptions put further pressure on shippers and manufacturers to get products into the hands of American consumers.

Walmart has come out swinging with a powerful answer to the question of how to attract drivers. According to a recent press release, the company is now bumping up pay for its starting salary all the way to $95,000 – $110,000 for starting drivers.

$110,000 to Drive for Walmart?

According to Walmart’s data, the average long-haul truck driver makes about $56,000 per year. That’s not bad for a career that you can get started with a few weeks of training, but $110,000 is a whole lot better.

Walmart boasts a team of about 12,000 drivers, and they also plan to reward drivers that are already on their team. Walmart is pushing new bonuses and wage increases based on tenure and location.

One of the big issues that new and experienced drivers have is with home time. Long-haul driving is more than a job. It’s a lifestyle. Weeks away from home, sleeping in the cab, eating at truck stops… it’s not for everyone.

Fortunately, Walmart also promises to accommodate drivers with better schedules that will increase home time.

What Other Initiatives Does Walmart Have?

In addition to the boosts in pay and bonuses that Walmart is promoting, the company allows drivers to take part in their “Live Better U” program. This program covers the cost of college tuition and books for Walmart drivers that want to take classes and expand their education opportunities.

The ability to drive for Walmart while also getting a degree is one that should attract drivers who want to drive temporarily before pursuing their passion career. With $110,000 starting salary, though, the drivers might choose to stick around longer than they planned.

Walmart also created a Private Fleet Development Program, which is a 12-week program that trains potential drivers to get their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and become Walmart drivers.

On the flip side of training, Walmart also allows the drivers of their Private Fleet to become Certified Driver Trainers. Existing drivers can undergo specific training in the Walmart Academy, which will turn them into driving instructors for new drivers. This job may even allow drivers who are done with the road life to still contribute to the industry and help keep the American economy moving.
