Just my personal experience. I have now been with TMC for a year and a half. Last week I traded in my 387 for a nice little 388. I like it and I am cautiously optimistic that it will be a good truck. That 387 was a lemon, strange because the first 387 I had was great, oh well, welcome to truck driving. Anyway, my overall experience has been a positive one, yeah things slowed down when the economy blew up, but it seems to be much better now. My next load usually hits my quallcomm within 15-30 min after sending in my empty. My FM is great and honestly seems to care. I haven't seen a $200 check since Jan or Feb and I really didn't see many of those, my current checks are doing fine. So I'm trying to find something to complain about, so you guys will believe I'm actually a truck driver, but I just can't seem to think of anything. That's OK, Terry can vouch for me.
Terry, glad to hear you're doing OK, you're one of the good guys on this planet. Sorry your MA school didn't pan out yet. Hey! Glad to see you posting, I wondered because I hadn't seen you post for so long. I'm doing good with ATS. When I returned to trucking I wanted to come back to TMC, I think I am happy right where I am now. I have so much more freedom. I've been to Tulsa several times recently, I'm sure you're out on the road though.

I am loving it. So much more freedom in load selection. No one looking over my weblog, which we don't have. I get all the miles I can handle and more. Pay is as good, even better, than when I first started with TMC on Long Haul, before the slow down. Usually, I get multiple load offers when empty and frequently preplans. I seem to run more in the West than with TMC, which is what I prefer. Life is good, just tiring.

how's the equipment and hometime Terry? saw one of your Petes at the Days Inn down in Laredo last weekend, didn't look too bad.
ran my @ss off the last 2 weeks, got a nice 5 stop John Deere load from Niagara Falls to Texas. made $5600 to the truck last week, but only $1000 the week before because my John Deere load took up most of last week and the last stop didn't deliver until the next Monday. still, averages out to $3300 a week, not too bad. worth running last weekend. picked up one of our first loads out of Caterpillar in Illinois and made it home for this weekend. got 3 preplans in a row, starting to remind me of the olden days. should be looking at the first nice paycheck in months this week... hoping to get my numbers back to where they were before. 24% sucks.

I do like the better quality of freight with ATS. Hauling wallboard, lumber, pipes and those Lowe's loads suck. In three months, I think I have tarped five times, two of those were already tarped and made $100.00 to $250.00 each.

I passed an ATS 387 on 30 about halfway across IN a couple weeks ago, looked like a load I'd enjoy hauling.
on a positive note, my trainer made $7000 to his truck last week.

That's pretty good if there wasn't any carry-over. Maybe things are looking up?

I have gone over all 201 pages of this thread and looked at TMC's website, unless I missed it, I was not able to find the answer to my question. How doe's TMC operate the OTR part of training for apprentice drivers? Do the trainers ride shotgun the whole five weeks or is it like that for a couple of weeks and then team driving?
Thanks and drive safe.

In a nutshell, with no experience behind the wheel, you will be out for 6 weeks. The first four weeks you will share driving duties, but you will be the one driving the most. Unless its changed, the last 2 weeks you can team if your trainer feels comfortable. My cousin went to TMC with a few years otr, but no general flatbed(pulled flatbed, but with same freight all time). He went out for two weeks, did all driving, and just basically gained the securement experience.
This may have all changed by now, its been about 2.5 years since he went out. |
