Ditto on the advice!

 

It's good advice to call on any application you submit to any company, not just TMC. Hopefully TMC has gotten better than they were a year ago about people calling in. I was rushed off the phone as quickly as possible because they "don't really have the time for this right now, call back tomorrow." Uh yeah right, moved on down the line to the next one.

 

I've got a friend who's works at TMC ...

He's been there about 7 1/2 months now, and he LOVES it. He and his wife (no kids) love doing the OTR thing (rider after 6 months). They recently declined to renew the lease on their apartment and are using his mom's address for their "permanent residence". They're touring all over the country, have tons of pictures from all over the place, and just generally enjoy the open road.

His only complaint was, for a while his dispatcher wasn't giving him too many good loads, I guess his loads are getting better now so he's happy with that.

He works for Percentage rather than CPM.

TMC is probably one of the best companies out there! All the drivers seem happy with them and they have a great training program when it comes to flatbeds! 8)

 

Well, Its good to read some decent stuff about TMC. I am done with my school at the end of this week and head for des moines this weekend. We will start Tuesday next week due to memorial day and all. Anything I should know before? There are 2 of us from my school headed there next week. Should be fun.

 

The newbie instructor, if it is the same one, is a hard ass (or tries to be), former Marine! :wink: . He is really not all that bad!

1. Take your hat off in the building!
2. Pay attention to instructions!
3. Stay off Harold's Grass!
4. When on the pad, be serious about backing, maneuvering, etc! Practice, Practice, practice!
5. First day at the motel, they will give you a packet to fill out before class, have it filled out to the best of your ability before goofing off!
6. Do not get discouraged by the donuts outside the front door of the motel, most of them are actually quite happy with their positions and just like jerking the chain of the newb's.
7. Take your swim trucks, they have a great pool and jacuzie (ughh-spelling) and if you like to work out, take whatever workout gear you use, they have an excellent gym also!
8. Do not screw around on the simulators, your performance on them is taken seriously, and I have heard of them holding guys back a week for jacking around!
9. Oh, did I say stay off of Harold's grass!

Can't believe the amount of people these days who have no respect for taking their hats off when inside a building. I go out to eat dinner, hat comes off but stand back and count the number of hats still on people's heads. Not gonna kill you to take a hat off unless you have some ultraviolet medical condition. And people screw around not listening to instructions or goofing off while attempting to get a job? "Why did they not hire me?" I wouldn't hire you to wash my vehicle if your acting like a 5 year old, why would you expect me to hire you to drive a deadly weapon? For as tough as TMC is in training, I'm glad they try to weed out the children of the groups. We don't need them driving any rig.

 

Thanks for the heads up about the hat thing. I will just leave it at home.
As far as the "harshness" of the training, its one reason I chose TMC. I want someone who is going to correct me on my screwups, before I get out on the road. Better to fix it in training before I get all those bad habits.

 

One time I was eating in a restauraunt ,and all was good and right with the world, and then this hoodlum struts in with a ball cap on ,and sits down and orders his food ...well he did not remove his hat , and all of sudden my food tasted funny , and people started to get sick then this poor poor young lass seated directly across from him started speaking in tongues ,and she pointed at the hat just before here eyes started to bleed...yes indoor hats cause stigmata in women ,and spoil food... this why it's rude ,offensive ,and "disrepectfull" to don a hat indoors . This is why I now always sit down and rudely stare at everyone in the building and take a head or" hat" count to make sure all is well an good ,because the outcome of indoor hats can be tragic .
