Use common sense. Look in the mirror. Ask yourself if you would hire you.
You can have long hair. Just keep it clean and at least neat. Comb the crumbs out of your beard and mustache regular.
Change clothes at least 3 times a week and try to shower the same.
For God's sake, buy and use deodorant and toothpaste.
It's an honorable job we do. Don't embaress those of us that still love the job we do.

it never hurts to overdress for any interview. Ive always lived by the belief that during and interview you dress the same or better than the person as high up in the company you want to go.
First impressions mean everything, even in truck driving. You could be the best driver in the country, then you meet your boss looking like a slob, that negative image is going to stick in his mind and usually no matter how great you work eithic is, its going to be really hard to overcome that negative first impression.

I for one am clean cut and I've been told many times I don't look like a trucker.
My hair is cut very short and kept above the ears. Before I head out for my 3 week run I get my hair cut again even though I don't need it.
I have 5 pairs of jeans and shirts and never drive when I'm dirty. After I load up I'll use baby wipes or the customer bathroom to clean up. I'll also change my clothes when I get back into the truck.
I pull a flatbed and many times I'm cut off from all civilization for days at a time. I still clean up every morning with baby wipes, brush my teeth, clean underwear, shave with an electric razor and at least wet my hair so it looks neat. If my hair is dirty I will make hot water in my Mr. Coffee and wash my hair over my trash barrel.
Whenever I buy new sneakers I save the old ones. When my sneakers get dirty I wash them with my clothes and put my old ones on.
So, my definition of clean cut is
Clean clothes
High and tight hair cut
Clean teeth
Clean hands, nails and trimmed
I worked in high tech for many years and have had many people work for me. If you came in for an interview without putting your best foot forward you didn't get a job from me! I don't care if you were wearing your fathers suit and tie that was 10 sizes too big, you got the job if you had the technical requirements.
I've always been treated with respect by customers, police and DOT officials and I attribute most of that because of my appearance and being polite.

Absolutely. I've been told I look more like a longshoreman than a truck driver (particularly in the winter, when I wear a watchcap (stocking hat, or toque for our Canadian friends) most of the time) but a clean longshoreman. I keep my hair cut to about 1/4" all the way around, with a full beard. And I'm about 6'3" and stocky, so you can kind of see where the "just got off a boat" thing comes in.
And being polite & friendly is highly underrated in this business, it seems.

But, then you have to put those little, tiny plastic things on the barbs so that you can take them out and use them when you need them.

Hey, that was in Disney world. Nobody wears a watch cap in Florida, even in March.

Now the question is: If you walk into an interview "clean cut", looking clean, dressed "normal", BUT you take your coat off and you have visible tattoo's on your arms, does this totally tarnish your "clean cut" look? I've always wondered this because I like tattoo's and do have some, but they arent visible, and I have purposely avoided getting visible tattoo's for the reason of employment.
Interested to hear what the majority thinks. Specifically pertaining to a truck driver position.
