My first question to the "owner of the school" would be: How many years of experience "yankin' a tanker...does she have? Or is she just repeating "trucker's stories"? Not trying to be snide....but without someone having actual experience pulling a tanker....there is no way that they can state that it is "dangerous".

The simple truth in the matter is this: The only thing dangerous about tanker work....is the driver. If the driver is not a safe driver.... then its a dangerous situation. But even still....that same driver would be dangerous on a bicycle or even a pair of roller skates.

Yes, there are different techniques to driving a tanker....and most of them involve "taking it easy". You have to not be in a hurry, and learn to be a professional driver...not an amateur with a CDL. For what its worth, our accident rate is far lower than box, reefer, skateboard companies. Why? Because "safety" is priority # 1. We also run legal, and we are not under pressure to deliver against the clock.... You may not understand this completely....but the only "HOT" loads we pull....have a UN 3257 placard on them.

I was surprised to see Superior recruiting information on the table in the classroom. I went in today to talk to the school owner about applying with them and she called the terminal manager. He is going to come out to the school to do my interview next week. I am in Winston Salem NC and will probably work out of the Aurora NC facility if they hire me.
If you can get into tankers.....and really apply yourself to learning how to pull a tanker....you will probably stick with it until you retire. The pay is better, the conditions are better, and its simply a better job all the way around.

Good luck with your interview!! Be sharp, dress sharp, and be professional!!

Thanks to all of you for the good information.
Happy to be of help!!

Thanks mudpuddle and skywalker for the pm's and advice on the interview.

Mudpuddle the terminal is not Aurora but Archdale which I believe is the High Point one you are out of. I was wrong before and actually got Aurora in my brain from this thread.

OK, Highpoint I've been to several times...actually quite a few times. Good people there...and it looked like they have just their yard "resurfaced" here recently!!

I am out of Baltimore Rob but my family does still live down there and I have some rental property there and in Greensboro.

Yes Skywalker they have a really nice lot, not to be confused with the one in Baltimore. Our employee parking area is paved but the trailer drop and truck parking area is a pothole and dirt jungle.

I don't envy you trying to take care of rental property long distance like that. I did that once with property in Charlotte. It was a real pain and that was with my parents in the real estate business there.

Yeah... I was just in High Point the other day....looks like it just got re-paved! All nice and smooth!! Yep, Baltimore is a little on the dusty side, but having a nice and secure place to spend the night while headed to the NE is a real bonus up in that area. Especially if you get up there late at night...when parking anywhere else is at a premium.

BTW... I sent you a PM that may be of some interest to you...

I had a load Friday. loaded in Charlotte NC, one hour to load. went 55 miles to Oakboro, one hour travel time, 45 minutes to unload. one hour back to Charlotte to pick up a load for delivery in Ms on monday. total time invested in oakboro load 3 hours 45 minutes, paid me $150.00 thats 40 bucks an hour. or $ 1.36 a mile.. wish I could do that every day!!!!
