Why does everyone think that truck driving is simple? That experience doesnt matter, that you dont learn anything. You need to open your eyes. There is a big difference between those who do 500-600 a week, and those who do 1000+ a week. Id be safe to say, those seeing low $$ havent been in a truck too long, matter of fact Ill almost guarantee it. Because those who have, know what to do. That only comes with experience, not driving school. I guess I was lucky, my dad taught me, and he taught me well, now after 5 years flatbed(not a spot on the ass of those like my dad, with 45+years) I see so many who want to whine about low $$, but dont want to do a thing about it, but blame, blame, blame

To bring 600 Gross in a week, with 23% newby pay, would mean you brought 2600 to the truck that week, now divide that by the number of days you should have worked, 5, which means you got roughly 5-500 loads, usually the $500 loads average from 100 miles to 300 miles, give or take. So you have ran roughly 1500-2000 miles in a week, there are drivers running that many in 3 days. If your doing a lot of sitting, I d be doing a lot of talking, demanding better miles, and better $$.

Hey, great post! I was wondering if you could explain the logistics on how to run 1500-2000 miles in 3 days.

Thanks!

Creek

not at all impossible... 650 miles are done easily per day. but than again, i always slept (and still do) at shippers/recievers, and do my "errands" during the day, usually early afternoon... if i'm not home with my wife, and am out here working, i'm working. not screwing around...

32% in 2 months, stood there for 2 untill i quit for a better job. i avaraged out $1150 take home. some were bad as low as $511, some were $1425... but i worked my a$$ off, and didn't F around...

cheerioos

Ok so its all my fault I get it now.My trainer was an O/O and he was and is the man.I have 100% faith that he trained me the way I needed. With that
base I know better than to head out on monday.I did leave on sunday or try to at least.I did drop 5 loads the one week I could run.I dont BS around in truckstops and did my best to catch my break where I was getting unloaded the next morn so I could be first in line.Alot of what you guys say is 100% true and good advice. But if we all understand that the new guys dont know
all the correct things to do why bust on me for doing what I thought was right?I did call my FM,Team leader, break down, trainer to try and get things fixed.I leaned on my trainer for help and guidance and he made calls and sent sat msgs to the big people at TMC to no avail. How am I to know the next step with so little time at TMC?I need help and asked for it and some people did try and help just nothing came of it.I like the job and want to do it I just need to be given a little help to get things on track and I will do my best to keep them that way.I am not a fool,at no job do you walk in and get the big bucks on day one.You have to go thru learning steps and get to know the job before that money shows up on its own.I dont care about the money now I just want to work as I know the money will find me as I get better and the season changes. So how do I fix my current problem?

To bring 600 Gross in a week, with 23% newby pay, would mean you brought 2600 to the truck that week, now divide that by the number of days you should have worked, 5, which means you got roughly 5-500 loads, usually the $500 loads average from 100 miles to 300 miles, give or take. .

I don't know exactly the time frame that equal you earning newbie pay ...But 2600 miles and only grossing $600.00 is SHIT if newbie pay is anymore than a few months , Because I made more than that at Werner pulling a dry van at .30 cpm ...So only grossing $600 for 2500-2600 is les less than .25 CPM...Hardly a wage worth talking about ,and certainly not a wage I would put in the same sentence when mentioning a quality company .... I mean 2500-2600 miles and only grossing $600.00 ...C'mon a driver with 6 months in should be making more like $800.gross off just those miles which would be about .32 CPM , But $600.00 is less than .25 CPM ...Now how are you going to spin making less than .25 CPM ,as a quality wage in 2007 ?

I believe he meant $2,600.00 DOLLARS to the truck (earned by the truck for TMC) not 2600 miles. At TMC drivers are paid based on what the truck EARNS as most work on percentage pay NOT mileage pay. ops: ops: ops:

Ok I see he's talking gross dollars per trip ,and running 1500-2000k miles to earn $600.00 ...I don't see how a driver couldn't average $800.00 1000.00 a week if they really want to ...But then again I have not yet ever worked for TMC , So I really can't speculate on potential earning a driver should or shouldn't be able to obtain.

Drivers and FM's shoot for $4,000/week to the truck as a YEARLY average. That means during the busy season you will make more to the truck and now, probably less. I made between $800 and $1100 gross pay/week when with TMC running OTR and $1100/week when running a dedicated account in NJ.
ANYONE with a few months "in" should be able to make $800.00 weekly with minimal effort and applying what they learned during training IF they want to.

I know TMC advertises you can make up to 60,000 your first year and some do manage to make that. They advertise in the local papers here and the ad states "come to TMC Transportation and earn 700+ per week." So at least they are up front with what you can expect to make driving for them.
The problem I'm stuggling with is, back in 1985 I drove for a short while due to the fact I was laid off from my present job at Ford Motor Co. Although I did have one of the better trucking jobs, hauling cars for a subsiderary of Ryder, I was making double what they are paying now. And It's hard to understand why the pay has basicly been frozen for twenty years.
I always enjoyed driving and thought to myself I might like to do it again one day, but as I said I am struggling with the pay a driver makes these days.
I guess if a guy were to drive for a year or so and then maybe look into being an Owner Oper. it may pay off in the long run if he is careful and tries to stay busy.
What do you think?

I agree 150% that truck drivers in general are WAAAAY underpaid. But there are some companies that pay 90,000 and up to drivers with a few years experience AND perfect driving/felony records.
