Therefore, it seems to me that the owner operator in the first post has to do is figure how much it costs to pay for their needs or wants such as food, sirius, showers, insurance, retirement, house payments, etc.

Then break those costs into monthly amounts and divide by the 8000 miles he runs monthly to find out how much he has to make per mile for his lifestyle.
Maybe he decides he wants a new pool table and he can't get a better rate/mi? He'll have to run more miles.

Some people have a paid for house and may not need to make as much as another.
Some people have no kids and don't need to save for college or diapers.
Some people have a spouse who may work and cover the health insurance.

All of those situations allow some drivers to work for less and drive down rates because they're capitalist pigs.

You simply cannot use a random figure for operating costs for all owner operators or independents. It won't work. You still need to include wages to get your actual operating costs.

That would kinda depend on how he got his license. A lot of companies wont hire you unless you went to an approved school. For example Crete turned me down when I first started because the school I went to wasnt approved by them.

Why are you asking truck drivers to do accounting tasks? A good accountant can answer your questions and make you aware of operating expenses, fixed costs, tax issues, depreciation,and replacement costs. A good accountant will also discuss your type of business in regards to what you hope to acheive from it. Corporation, LLC, partnership, etc. Our accountant charges $150/hr. but the expense is well worth it for the exact info your looking to get. All of the responses you'll receive will vary because each company has different situations.[img][/img]

I'm asking because I was told my figures are not correct.

If I say 2+2=4 and you say that is wrong tell me why.

I studied and took the knowledge test. Then my dad let me take his tractor with the 48' split axle to the dmv and I passed the skills test on the first try. I have very limited experience, no formal training, and no classroom training. I'm not about to pay $5k to a school to teach me how to pass a test because that is all most of the schools do anyway.

The only reason companies require newbies to graduate from an accredited school is due to insurance and liability reasons. The only reason most companies require two years experience is due to insurance reasons.

Because 2+2 isn't the complete formula, which is what everyone has been telling you. You just don't want to accept that.

I know it is not the complete formula. It is the base formula. Now that we know 2+2=4 and we are in agreement we can add the wages. All I wanted was the base figure to break even.

[a(2+2)+w]

a=number of trucks
w=wages

Wow, you really don't want to listen. It is not the complete formula for figuring your base cost of operating.
