Could be a big carrier looking to get a truck to where they have a decent rate going out on a load booked? If the truck did 1.05 700-ish miles to load that paid 2.15/mi going 1100 miles, that would be a decent average for all the miles after a 30cpm driver hauled it in a company rig. Keep in mind, that would be for a fleet of large trucks, not a solo o/o.

Default fuel

The only thing we can do is Drive slower an get the best fuel mpg that we can. Not haul the cheep frieght. Better mpg empty  I get a good fsc on my out going loads but with the brokers I normaly dont see one on the back hauls. right now the only thing the back haul does is pay the fuel an food for the whole trip. As long as the dollar keeps falling Oil will keep going up. If oil keeps going up, people will have less to spend. It will be going in the gas tank. Just wait till this Summer when the Elct. bills start to come in My Elct.Co. hits me with a fuel surcharge that is almost as much as the amount of Elct. I used. And every time you go to the store food has gone up, why Fuel. Do I have an answer, wish I did. Will the price come down, Yes it will. the demand will be down cuz no one will be able to aford to buy the darn gas or fuel. But then the demand for trucks will be down as well, shippers wont have anything to ship. I think it is going to be very interesting to watch what happens in the next few months

I agree kilroy,..this should be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I feel bad for the guys that are going to lose their shirts during this. It's not fair to them, just because some shipper /broker holds back on FSC. If I had a truck/trailer payment and no money in reserve,..I would probably just cut and run. Get a GEO Metro and deliver pizza. I did it for 4 years and made $150.00 just in tips per 8hr shift. That little 3 cyl. Metro 44mpg city.
Its all about the fuel

In my area, there are tons and tons of garbage loads being moved for as low as 85 cents a mile  I think a big, and I mean big problem is guys taking backhauls for nothing. Your backhaul is someone else's headhaul, no matter where you are :!: Just don't do it.

I guess you haven't been paying to much attention to the market. The high oil prices are the result of manipulation, by investor groups representing retirement funds, by oil company employed commodity brokers, and by "Foreign" investment firms.

Sorry I didn't explain myself. I MEANT government manipulation, the other dudes are EXPERTS at this (oil companies, unions etc.) and nothing will stop them except THE LAWS (of supply and demand).

Don't waste your time on stuff that you can't do anything about. Concentrate on what you can do about it (junk the h--o--o--d [SUPPER extended?], slow down your aero, ask as many newbies as you can to 'ship-out' otherwise you'll get the unionists with their bats to do it for you, -then hauling prices will catch-up with fuel prices.

This IS the ONLY thing you can do!

God Bless all

Is my T-8 a hood or an aero? I'm so confused :? I'll actually be speeding up on this leg of the trip. Customer service demands it. CHARGE MORE!

Fuel's a cost of doing business. You have to charge enough to cover your costs. Cover your costs (PROPERLY FIGURED) and you can't go broke. Can't get enough to cover your costs? Time to get out. There's no honor in going down with the ship. Lose the anchor before it takes you down and figure out something else to do. Anyone here can get a job as a company driver and if you're losing your shirt as an O/O you'll damn sure make more income as a company hand. Oh, right...the freedom...I forgot

There is little anyone can do about the high fuel prices other than raise your rates accordingly. Refuse to haul cheap freight. The price of fuel has much less impact when your rates move accordingly.

don't laugh at the rate
these loads are snapped up quick
at 4.00 a gallon
the guys who used to deadhead "to a better area"
are now being squeezed into taking these loads
they will never raise these rates
there is absolutely no profit in the load it's 100% fuel money
theres no way you can make them budge on the rate by refusing to haul it
theres a line waiting to get it

I would not waste my time calling a broker or shipper who thought so little of my time than to offer me less than $1/mile to haul their freight. I never mind losing a cheap load to some poor sucker who is going broke with every load. You don't have to haul these cheap loads. You can either sit and see if you can find something that has a decent rate or deadhead out. At least you will burn less fuel when you deadhead. I would rather sit and relax while going broke than haul someone's freight for nothing. When you haul a load for less than it costs you to operate and a fair profit, then you may as well sit at home. Let these operators haul all the cheap freight they can put on their trucks. I can only control what I do. And I refuse to haul cheap freight. The funny thing about this type of freight is that the rates ALWAYS go up when they need to move it. If someone continues to offer me cheap freight I tell them to take me off of their call list. I see no point in wasting my time or theirs.
