Seems to me that we were first talking about setting brakes at a loading dock, not a truck stop. I will freely admit, as will others, that I do not set the trailer brakes in a truckstop, especially in winter when they could freeze up. However, a loading dock is an entirely different matter. At a loading dock, I set ALL brakes, and chock the wheels. In winter, I will also put about a shot-glass full of airline anti-freeze into the glad-hands to keep the lines from freezing up on the trailer.
like I said you and the very very few posting here are the minority (very small minority) of drivers that set tractor/trailer at a dock ,As most drivers don't ,and only do when dropping the trailer ...this minority also applies to using wheel chaulks at docks other than where cutomer insists .

Gman, thanks for the elaborate reply. I've always been told about trailers freezing up in the winter, and I do understand how it can happen. That's something I'm gonna have to pay close attention to this winter. BJ...I'm very curious to see your statistics. When and where did you survey these drivers, how many were surveyed, and what is your margin for error? I mean...to make such claims, you HAVE done a survey...RIGHT???

Wheel chaulk is what the meter maids use to mark your tires when they're making their rounds. If you are parked longer than the allowed limit (say 2 hours) then they ticket you.

Ah, but BJ...that reason you stated only applies when it's COLD out!
Were you asleep during science class? Water will turn to ice at a temperature of 32 degrees farenheit...which means that you have no reason for the half of the year that it's warm out...

This from a person who thinks an open carrier puts twist to both axle shafts on anything but dry pavement with fairly level surface ... spelling has and always will be the last resort of an unkowledgable party when they know they're wrong , but lack technical knowledge to argue further on the subject ,and resort to grammar in a post ,which has little to do with the post ...unless this has become a spelling B contest , but they don't allow spell check in the spelling B ...not even the ones that give you alternate spellings ,so you are sure to use the correct spellng ...But then again spelling is very important when internet trucking ,so I should'nt over look it's importance when typing to folk who only drive a desk...wink
