I had a delivery of modular office furniture to a construction job in one of the skyscrapers in the Chicago loop. Delivered OK, then couldn't figure out how to get back out due to the one way streets. Figured I'd follow the street I was on until I got to a corner I could handle, skipped several streets becase they were too crowded or tight. Finally get to the end of the road, which was Grant Park. Now in Chicago it is illegal for trucks to drive on a boulevard, and there is nothing but boulevards leaving Grant park. I was effectively trapped, despite having multiple roads leading me out. Finally a cop stopped by and escorted me back out... after writing me a nice ticket for driving on a restricted road (the same road he escorted me across, lol)

My first trip into Chicago I was driving for a company too cheap to pay tolls. No problem, check the MCA and find US41 goes right through, no tolls. SO I follow that thru until it becomes Lake Shore Drive. Shortly thereafter a nice officer pulls me over and informs me that I am on a restricted route. Got an escort that time but no ticket.

On the lighter side:

I once made the mistake of stopping for Cigarettes at the Pilot in Hagerstown MD... that only took an hour

I once made the mistake of shutting down for the night at the Walt Whitman in Philly.

I once volunteered to take a load to Hunts Point just to see what all the fuss was about.

what is this person talking about? I need to relax; I did thats why I drove around but I could not find my way around. That is what the cops are for; to protect and serve. I needed help and instead going any further I called for help so the served me with help back to the freeway. You need to relax and before you post another reply understand what the person is saying.

Wrong. The preferred method of relaxing is to pull over, set the brakes, and take a few minutes to sit on your bunk! Driving around in circles, while lost, is NOT relaxation!

By SOME stretch of the imagination, one might think that the Cops are "for" giving directions to lost truckers, but "911" is definitely NOT for anything other than EMERGENCIES.

Perhaps, you MIGHT have thought to stop, set brakes, and get OUT of your truck and go find someone to ask directions from? NO..... you called the emergency line because YOU weren't prepared!

I am amazed at how some people think. What is wrong with calling for help rather it be 911 or else. You are right I could have gone and asked for direction from someone, but what if they had given me wrong directions again. I tried to find my way back without bothering anyone but I could not. Its not like I had a the local police station phone number or something and what is sitting on the bunk is going to solve. I was not mad was not driving fast or trying to run people off the road I just drove around a little bit so to prevent more damage I dialed for help. So you are saying when you get lost just park the truck and go and sit on the bunk. The operator that took the called and the cop that responded did not mind me dialing 911. The cop even told me I probably did the right thing because some of the roads do not allow tractor trailers on them so I probably saved myself some more time and prevented myself from getting a ticket.

Backed into a Wal-Mart warehouse. I got distracted from unhooking my trailer, went to pull forward and felt the trailer slamonto the trucks frame. I forgot to put the landing gear down  . I put the gear down as far as I could, deflated the air bags, and slid back under  . I never let anyone distracte me again.

Forgot to open the doors on several occasions. Probably a remnant from my days loading trucks that all had roll up doors  . Now I know why many driver open their doors as soon as they stop at the shipper/receiver

Was going south on I95 from Boston. I was tired, low on fuel, and it was 2am. I must have missed the loop that goes west to Jersey from up near NY. As I keep driving I started crossing water. I thought that is weird, looks like the Meadow Lands....Oh, hell. Then the highway started going under the secondary roads instead of over them. Yup, NYC. My map was in the bunk at the time ops: . I was getting a bit nervous as I was looking for a sign...any sign to get me out of there. Then I saw it "I78 East and all points to New Jersey  . It was even marked "oversized vehicles". Yay for me!!!!
Fuel guage was at 1/16 of a tank, I was hoping to get to the fuel stop on I78. As I was taking the ramp, I stopped on a hill for traffic at the light. Traffic started to move on the green. All the cars were turning left. Some cars would bear left more then others, the rest would bear right on the left turn.....weird. As I approached the interection, it looked like I had plenty of room. Then I saw it  . A big I-beam holding up the subway and he brought his entire family to be in my way :x .
I didn't have enough room for the trailer, so I started looking for a way out....and I found it. Ahead of me was nice really nice clean sidewalk. Couldn't have been more then a month old. I took it as wide as I could, pulled the right steer on it, locked in the power-divider, then felt the drives go up too. As I watched the trailer, the side marker light made the beam bright red in color. I must have been inches to it . As soon as the middle of the tandoms were at the bean, I cut it hard left and bearly made it. yay !
Then I was wondering how much the toll would be to cross the Washington bridge. No toll out of the city :P

I have 2 good ones

Star Transport- I spent the night at the T/A on I-80 in PA (exit-173), I was running New Jersey to Chicago. I woke up and got back on the road. I couldn't tell you what I was thinking but I realized I was going the wrong way when I crossed the state line back into New Jersey.

Advantage- (you fuel haulers will know what I'm talking about) 1st week on my own. I had a no fit on my second stop on a split load with compartment 1 and 4 loaded. I dropped my number 1 compartment and retained the 2700 gallons in the number 4 compartment. To get back to the Interstate you have to go up a good size incline and it was raining. I tried to get up the hill but didn't even get close to making it up the hill. I had to go back to the gas station and wait for them to sell 1000 gallons, it only took 8 hours. I was lucky it was my first load of the day.

It don't work. Hard enough just to get through much less go around and about. Got through that one, guess what,,,, yep another one,,,,,,must be some kind of experiment on circular intersections. Finally got turned around and yep had to go back through both of them again.

That's trucking!
