Awarning to newbies

I had a part-time hobby for a few years with a small dump truck and a forklift. I did scrap metal.
I enjoyed doing it, and actually made good money until steel prices dropped. But my non-ferrous sure added up great. It brought out the Redd Foxx (Sanford & Son) in me. I heard scrap metal is going back up? ...not sure. Lotta scrap out there. :P

I work for a company that hauls fuel around here. I work 4 days @ 12 hrs per day and then 4 days off. My income for this year is going to be the highest I have ever got trucking. Plus I got only two years experience behind the wheel. I think it's pretty good for the amount of experience I have.
I don't think you can expect to get a job like this down in the US with the limited experience such as myself. I consider myself a newbie still and am very blessed to have this opportunity. There are jobs out there for you if you look hard enough. I hope everyone that gets into trucking eventually gets a good paying job and is not stuck giving away their time doing OTR for big OTR companies.

In the meantime, do you mind if I ask where you work to get that many days off a week? I think I could do OTR if I was out 4-5 days a week. I do not mean the pay neccessary that you make as I realize that came with experience but those hours are definitely managable.

 I copied this to bring back some fond memories.
---------------------------- Every time Lamont threatens to leave, Fred clasps one hand across his heart, starts to stagger and shouts skyward to his deceased wife "I’m coming to join you, Elizabeth, this is the big one." Fred’s highest compliment is to call someone a "Big Dummy!" The Sanford's collect and deliver their junk and other questionable antiques in a red 1952 Ford pickup and a 1947 Mercury M-47 truck. After a hard days work, Fred reaches for the soothing refreshment of a bottle of Ripple. Over the years, Fred's love affair with Ripple has inspired him to create such concoctions as Mintchipple (Mint julep + Ripple); Cripple (Cream + Ripple); Champipple (Champagne + Ripple); Beaujolipple (Beaujolais + Ripple); and Manischipple (Manischewitz + Ripple). Fred’s relatives included Aunt Ethel [Lamont’s favorite] and Elizabeth’s bible-thumping sister, Aunt Esther Anderson who calls Fred an "Old Fish-eyed Fool." Fred reciprocates and calls her "Ugly" and variations on that theme]. Once, he cried “You are so ugly that if you pressed your face in some dough...you'd have gorilla cookies.”

Picking up cans I averaged $5.00 a day. Spent more on gas than I made, not to mention almost getting ran over.

Roadhog, You may want to check into scrap metal prices if you're serious. It's high right now and farmers are cleaning up alot of junk and making a small fortune doing it. Supposedly a salvage yard near here has a 6 to 9 month wait on farm cleanups.

Holy crap!!!
I have 4 months solo exp. I BRING home no less then $650ish all I have to say is instead of sleeping/playing patty cake in the bunk or w/e you did to waste so much of your time is not anyones fault but your own. Now before you think I have a 1 in a million job I DONT I make .29 a mile. I dont take the 4 days they give to do a 1700mi run I run it get it there get empty and have already told my FM that I would be ready at xxx time for another load and keep the wheels moving. Yes if your working for swift or the sort where they seem to think that you can make it on 1800 miles a week that sux but all you need to do is explore a lil yea you might have to go with a trainer again but shoot its worth it. Man I have ran as lil as 2500 miles and most 4200 miles in one week. if your a bum in this job you will be paid like one. IF you bust ass and show your worth MOST companys will take care of you. As of right now i am keeping my ear to the ground for that better opp that might be out there. I have no real complaints about the company I work for now other then even on the 3000-3400 mile weeks I feel like im sitting to much but I dont think with my limited exp those are out there yet but it dont hurt to network a little and learn of the golden nuggets that are out there just not with a flashy ad in the paper. Thanks Troy
