Let the Big 3 go bankrupt !!!
#21
I don't know. I heard yesterday that they had negotiated. Apparently, a while back, they had been given some money for "clean" technology. I think it went onto the table as a request to re-allocate those funds in lieu of a bail out. I am not sure if I heard everything right...kids in the car with me and all. I never followed up to see how the "talks" went. I did hear today that one of the big 3 has offered to sell two of their private jets. To who, I wonder.

If they go bankrupt it doesn't mean they'll go out of business, they'll just reorganize. Benefits being they could close a ton of dealerships, renegotiate union contracts, pair down the product lines, etc.
Something you may not know is that the Japanese way of doing things was invented by an American born in Sioux City. A guy named W. Edwards Deming. Part of his theory was that quality cuts costs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming

If they file bankruptcy, they can eliminate hundreds of millions of dollars worth of annual retirement and medical benefits. Maybe even Billions of dollars worth of benefits. United Airlines did it. Northwest Airlines did it. Continental Airlines has done it a couple 3 times.

Give me a break here. These execs all flew private company jets to DC in order to ask for a handout. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get there. Why couldn't they have drove a fuel efficient car, or flew coach, or at the very least traveled together in one private plane instead of going separately? Nothing like driving up to the welfare office in a brand new Rolls Royce wearing a new custom Brioni suit to apply for food stamps.

I've always believed in buying American when it comes to 4 wheelers. (and most other things)
Sure, most of our newer domestic cars have foreign parts in them, even the engines in some cases. I still feel that buying an American product benefits our country in the long run. I've never owned an import vehicle, never will. If the big 3 go down, it will have major effects on our economy, and the world economy as well. Things will be worse than what they are now. I'm on the fence as to whether the government should help them out, but I think its in our best interest to help them out during this tough time. I wouldn't mind my taxes going up a little to help out. I know, their unions and their wages are out of this world, but we need to stay competetive in the auto market. Taxes, regulations, unfunded mandates... gov't mucks up everything. We got bigger problems. If you are not faint of heart, I just posted a couple of links in this thread: Your eyes will open . . http://www.classadrivers.com/forum/a...will-open.html

I don't know about the others, and I can't speak about recently, but about two years ago, Chrysler would set someone up with a dealership. Buy the land, build the place up, and you have a dealership. Training, sales staff, and all. But, I don't know if that would have been privately owned or company owned and you just get to be the "FRONT PERSON".

All stores are owned by individuals, big corps (AutoNation, CarMax) etc... the only time the factory steps in is when the dealership goes into receivership, is out of trust, or the factory revokes the franchise agreement and is looking for another individual to take over the franchise. |
