We were taught TMC's "approved method" of setting up to be pulled out of being in a stuck situation but not using TMC equipment to do the pulling. If something went wrong TMC would have pulled the plug on you. Ask your FM or Safety if it is OK to use your truck as a tow truck.
Snake_Ize is right. You were lucky Terry. In the future, never use company equipment to do that. Was it the "right" thing to do? Yes. Was it nice of you? Yes. Would it have cost you your job? Yes.
Well, now I know. No one ever told me that before. I thought that is why they demostrated it for us at orrientation.
Yikes! Terry, I re-read your post. I thought TMC had OK'd you to go ahead and get that other truck unstuck. What you said in the post is that you simply were following TMC's approved method for doing so. I agree with GoldiesPlating & Snake_Ize--don't do again unless you get permission to do so.

The demo at orientation using the chains and 4x4 from the top of the trailer shows you how to have your stuck truck pulled backwards. They probably had problems in the past since most tow trucks will put chains around the axle or even the ICC bar which will cause damage almost everytime. As you found and mentioned in your initial post on this, these trucks have a lot of power and torque and it is very easy to twist an axle or drive shaft when pulling a stuck truck. You could easily do it if you rolled back and let up the clutch too fast while under load.

It was very nice of you to give the guy a hand but remember that it is not "your" truck and any problems will come back to bite you.

I'm sure they use the term towing not towed. As I am doing the towing not being towed.

tell next time i will be posting figures and pictures for the routing or any trip you guys want.... give me the qualcomm trip and i will give you magic...... holly molly guys if we dont say anything about this they will keep on for now i dont give a rat ass if my OOR is over 10% or my AVg mile is 5.5 or 6.2 forget about all that these are kids game they want to play us and all the certi. program and the TQM bulllllllssssssssss

you dont have to use their routing. i dont and i have 4.85%. and you can request money for the toll roads so you dont have to pay for it out of your pocket. i have run the copper runs several times and always kept it less than 7% oor. the only stop lights were the ones on the skinny road to the mine. i have prepass/ez pass and nearly all the bridges and toll roads on the upper east coast are covered. here is something for you... if i get mt around lubbock, its a pretty good bet that i will have to go to acme to load wb. the routing has me going back up to amarillo and back to 287 to acme for a grand total of 228 miles. take a look at a map. in texas, truck can run most farm-to-market roads if they are less than 48000lbs. last i checked, it was. so i saved time and made money. its not all bad with the routing.

So do I Terry, my routing is better 9 times out of 10. Being a truck driver involves BEING A TRUCK DRIVER. Not just a mindless steering wheel holder. Route YOURSELF and you'll do much better.

I have gotten so that I don't even look at the routing the Qualcomm spits out. I look at the atlas for the straightest line and follow it. I may play with a few options and I will take a longer route if it is better, but only up to 8%. If no run ever goes more than 8% out of route that keeps my average down to 5% or so.

so u all using your own routing very nice and all is avg 4% to 8% or what ever the amount it, thats not my point I-10 E, US 70 N, US 60 N, I-27 N, I40 E, I44 NE and that is a toll in tulsa,I 70 E,I 76 E and thats another toll,I78 E, I95W, I-80E, I-95 N, , I 395 W and you will be in norwih, ct for 2414 miles, why dont they send us that route instead letiing us run all te way through I-10 I-20 I-30 I-40 I-81, I-78 I-80 I-95 I-395 what the hell, and they bitch about OOR and they knnow we will be out of route.
First u can see there is alot of tolls in the first one and they prefere not to run tolls at all, the truck wont be happy on the first route to much shifting and breaking, so they prefer to send u on the long route and make 2585 miles and that will make your OOR higher and your next snapshoot will be fucked up.
