This is why you ALWAYS... I repeat, ALWAYS run with your own base plates. It only took me leaving my first carrier to learn that one! I bobtailed from Rydal, Georgia all the way to Springfield, MA with no plates on the truck and nobody ever said a word. Not that I'm recommending that... I was younger and stupider back then, but I did get away with it.

That was my thinking when I decided to try getting away with it. I think a lot of times they really don't pay much attention to a bobtail when one comes through the scale... you obviously aren’t overweight. I DID tape a piece of paper in my windshield (like you would if you had a temporary registration) and perhaps that also helped.

I'm doing the same thing now
I have no real plates, just a paper permit, so I printed out an official looking piece of paper and stuck it to the right lower bottom of the windshield. So far I did 1,000 miles and no one said anything. Landstar says I should get my real IL plates in 2 to 3 weeks. But I did keep my $20 Ontario truck plates (with a "T" for "temporary" on them). If I ever have to switch companies again, this plate might come in useful, you never know.

As I recall Landstar does add a little to the base plate when they get them for you. You are much better off getting your own plates if you have the money to do it. Illinois is one of the most expensive states in which to buy base plates.

I don't know how it works in US, but if I want to get genuine commercial plates for a 80,000 lb GVW truck in Canada, I have to get insurance first. So, it's not just plates. It's a complicated matter, one that I'm not ready to tackle at the moment. I"m happy with IL plates for now.
