Call Dalton Timmis Insurance down in Ancaster as one place to see about your insurance options. Spread over 12 months, no big hit up front. I agree with the other posters, you have WAY more options when you have your own plates, and aren't quite as much a slave. A CVOR application is just a form filling exercise. You should have one for just these occasions, as well as the set-up for your dreamed for independence.
