Sounds to me like Mr CH is having some trouble moving the cheap stuff. Word to the wise, somebody is always cheaper. Loose $25 on every load, but make it up with volume. Maybe their cheap contracts are coming home to bite them. Just think of their overhead. Big is not always better. Just food for thought from an "empty plate".

Something doesn't ring true in CHRBROKER32's posts. I find it difficult to believe that they would lose money on any load. They may not make as much money on some loads, but I really don't believe that they really lose money on them. I just can't see them taking money out of their pocket to move a load. They didn't get as big as they are by paying more to move a load than they receive. I could see them conceivably giving all of the profit to a carrier if they were in a really difficult bind with a big shipper and there was no other way to move the load, but don't see this happening as a standard course of business.
BigDiesel, rates are not quite what I would like to see, but our average is pretty decent and our deadhead is very low right now. Our rates seem to be doing better than a couple of weeks ago. There are some areas of the country where rates are very low and freight isn't moving that well. We have not had to do a lot of sitting the last several weeks and have not taken loads where we could not make a profit. Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised. I have a driver in one truck who is doing a very good job, making decent money and not killing himself. He sees that the equipment stays in good shape and takes care of business. A friend of mine just had the best week that he has had in a while and is getting home on the weekends. The main thing right now is to stay out of the bad areas, although it seems that there are a lot of them around right now. You want to keep moving, but not at the expense of making a fair profit. There are still a lot of carriers and owner operators who are taking cheap freight. That does make it more challenging to find better paying loads. The current economy and time of year requires that we work a little smarter and more efficiently.

Rates are not that bad, wish they were higher though. BTW GMAN the bad business statement was pointed towards our new broker friend, not the O/O's here. 8)

(of course probably doing that there's much I missed that I could learn). But I could have misread what you wrote, but I do remember the penalty thing for not moving a certain amount of freight. I had never thought of that.

I wonder why. That post wins the biggest crock of B.S. award for 2007. BTW,I got a call from CH Dorkinson today asking me if I still had a truck available. I said it depends on what the rate is. 427.00 to go from Fort Worth to Shreveport on a weekend and than deadheading back to Fort Worth for free. I laughed and told the clown I wouldn't move it even if he doubled that rate. 44k lbs too. Rates would shoot way up if these clowns finally fold up. Than again, the clowns that haul their crap are the real problem. Cheap and Heavy Dorkinson also had a load from Dallas to KS for 650.00. Frozen at minus 10. They also had a load from Dallas to Indianapolis for 950.00. I asked them if they had another LTL for that and they said it was a full load. At least CHR serves one good purpose for me:They still make me laugh when Im having a bad day.

I just looked at CH Robinson's web site. If I read it right, they make about 12% brokering truck freight. Thats NET not gross. Not to bad for a company with no trucks.
