For a driver, what's cheap?

I can't answer that question.
Some drivers live very well.
Some drivers, running the same stuff, don't live well.
Those that don't live well, contribute to the depression in rates.
|
So you want to see fewer drivers run for cheap but you can't say what cheap is?
|
You are right, about that.
It is still an individual thing, and will be, for quite some time,
Part of it is in the cost of living, around the country,.
NY will have a higher cost of living than KY.
Another factor that most don't consider, is the cost of dental care. This should be factored into the wage that a driver requires.
Thus, it should also be factored into the driver pay component, that an O/O uses to determine the least he can run for.
There are a lot of drivers out here, with no teeth, or poor teeth.
Low rate drivers will have a hard time taking care of their kid's teeth, much less their own.
Good dental care also has other health care implications.
The question is not easy, nor simple.
There are enough desperate people to keep the rate down.
They just don't understand that it is a pay me now, or pay me later type of question.
The same way a low rate driver defers maintenance.
They don't understand that deferred maintenance is the same as eating truck parts and supplies, for dinner.
That doesn't help with the dental problem, either.
