Steve,

So you were getting 5.1 mpg before the APU and 5.8 after? That's just about exactly what I kinda figured.....1 mile/CDN gallon.

I have the Nuvi 350 and I'm assuming your's does the same as mine. I touch the lower left hand corner and it brings up a screen that says average moving speed, current speed, miles traveled, top speed and so on. At the bottom is a button to reset the trip which zeros out the miles traveled.

You can also check your speedmeter reading against what the GPS is reporting.

You can also check by a measured mile at 60mph. You should go exactly 1 mile. I would do this for ten miles on a flat surface with the cruise control on then you can get your correction factor.

If you have a CB and you see a cop give him a shout and ask what your speed is. Most all of them talk to me if I say hello or make a wise crack and ask if they shot anyone tonight.

My fuel gauge was not correct and I replaced it in 15 minutes. It was really really easy on my truck. Just unscrew it, unplug it and replace it on top of the tank.

There were times I was getting 6 and better and sometimes less than 4 but for the quarters I was getting 5.1 and that has gone up to 5.8 in the past 2 quarters. It could be my driving is getting better, the loads, the wind. Not sure but there have already been many nights that my truck WOULD have been idling all night for 12 hours and instead of using 12 gallons I used between .1 and .2. My APU has a mode that I use where it shuts off until the inside temp is 5 degrees lower than my setting then it comes on, heats up and shuts off.

Is the fuel consumed by an APU taxed the same as road fuel or would it be taxed at a different rate like reefer fuel?

I don't know the answer, I don't do anything different and include all the fuel I use as the same on IFTA.
