With Progressive keep in mind that it's a 300 mile radius but that means you can go 300 miles in one direction then 600 in the other and still be in your radius. Print out a map and make a circle. It could work for you if your in a good area. If you have Microsoft Maps and Streets it will make a radius circle for you based on miles from center.

Also, with Progressive you are allowed to take 4 trips a year outside your area just as long as you are back within your 300 mile mark by the end of 7 days. This was only spoken to me with nothing in writing by the way.

I got insurance through a local agent but I think there were many other factors involved. I did give them all my personal insurance. Not sure what there criteria was and I'm not going to ask.

Thanks for responding everyone. I did call the number and have left a message. If I don't hear back in a day or two I'll call again.

SteveBooth, well I live in South Florida so 300 miles won't get me far whereas for you 300 miles is several states and 150,000 Dunkin Donuts I tell you that's the one thing I miss when I'm in the south. They are hard to find. Actually I must admit I haven't been following your posts all that often but I do believe you got insurance before two years; like I said maybe it's regional.

Assigned risk isn't for trucks in Florida from what I was told by an agent. Of course she could be wrong and I will look into it further.

Mr. GMAN, maybe I will look into leasing to a company. I have saved from one of your earlier posts the costs of running a truck. I need to find a company that's going to pay more than what a lot of these big companies pay. The only thing I don't like about leasing to a company is I won't get the experience, I believe anyway, of negotiating rates and seeing the costs of things. They will be doing that and sending me on my way like any other company driver.

As it is now when I call these brokers on behalf of the company I always ask questions so I am gathering a fair amount of info.

I always see posts about what companies to start for as a company driver, any suggestions on where to start as a O/O? As mentioned I can't go to Landstar because a lot of my time was local. I need a little more OTR time and inclement weather experience etc.

Thank you all for all your help and input. You know as a side note, I ask a lot of people, not only drivers but company employees and nobody has heard of this website. Obviously a lot have from all the posts, but I really feel fortunate to have found this site. From the level of discussion here in comparison from the chatter on the CB you would think each side was from a totally different profession. It's snowing up here today in New England so I try and keep the a CB on to see what's going on but I have to keep turning it off due to all the nonsense.

I'm curious as to why companies want OTR experience and don't count local. I would think local driving is much more difficult than long distance. Local to me means delivering in congested areas non stop.

Got to agree with you on that one Steve 20 years accident free in NY, they should be bowing to me. I am knocking on a big piece of wood right now :shock:

I have recently gone up to a Pizza Hut delivery guy driving a 53' van and gave him a compliment saying there was no way I could do what he did. This guy was in an impossible place as far as I was concerned. I would have turned around, gone back to the load place and have them take everything off.

Me, I'll drive 4 days on Rt 80 contemplating the delivery point. Zooming in on Google Maps to plan my attack. Planning every move using logic, determination, GPS, Mapquest, Microsoft Streets and Maps, the local police and sometimes have the customer take down a fence so I can pull in straight!!!! lol

Hats off to the local guys and gals for sure!!!

If you want to make more money while leasing to a carrier, you should find one that pays percentage. You can usually make more money. You will be told what the load pays and you can then decide if it is what you want to do. With some of the percentage carriers, you can do some negotiating. Those who pay mileage it really doesn't matter what the load pays because your compensation remains the same. I thought you mentioned you had about 1 year of driving experience. Exactly how much experience do you have? The level of experience will determine who you may be able to go with as an owner operator.

I got my license last March. The problem also is I went local at first. This won't affect my two year time frame but for instance if I went OTR right away I'd be coming up to a years experience and could at least look into Landstar.
You can buy a boat and hul havana's out of Cuba :lol:
