OK, I've decided to be a trucker. Got my 3 grand and am ready for school.

I've heard all the BAD stuff about being a trucker...what are the GOOD reasons? Are there any?

I"m single, no kids. Thanks in advance for any advice! :idea:

 

You work alone - don't have to listen to annoying co workers
can listen to the radio
don't have to lift heavey stuff all shift long.
ac in the truck on 90 degree days
can make 35 to 60 grand a year
don't need a college degree
easy to get into - one month or so trainning
lot lizards
pee jugs
hemroids
traffic

 

I can't think of any to be honest. But I wouldn't want to be anything but a driver. It's in my system and likely always will be.

 

So you decided to be a trucker. Learned alot from watching TV shows like BJ and the Bear. Found out the bad stuff about being a trucker....want to know the good.


When you find out, please post it here so the rest of us will know.

 

Because there are still jobs left here. By the time I get financed well enough to attend votech and graduate that may change. But it sure is a hard industry for anyone to survive, including illegal aliens, so it may survive a while longer. Once traffic signs start reading in spanglish though, look out!

 

The sights that you can see everyday.. I've seen the sun rise on the east coast, and the sun set on the west coast. Snow storms in Colorado, Tornado's in Kansas, Hurricanes in Louisiana... And things I would never have seen sitting in a factory..

In trucking, you can control you our destiny.. It's easy to start you our own business, where YOU are in control of your destiny. The harder you want to work, and the more specialized you want to get, the more money you can make..

The people. Although you have those "billy bad riggers" that sometimes think they own road.. MOST truck drivers are courtious and proffesional. I meet new people all the time, that end up becoming life long freinds.

Trucking is much like riding a motorcycle. It'll change your life. You become one with the road, and I veiw every load not as a job, but as a destination.. The more relaxed with the fact that you can't change traffic, nor stupidity on the road, the more relaxed with your surroundings you will become and enjoy the fact that most people would die for the freedom that we have day in and day out..

 

Well put. The "there's nothing good about truck driving" drivers get really tiresome. Same old BS over and over again. If you dislike it so much, get off the road. There's nothing in this world worse than someone who stays in a position to bitch and moan about everything they do and does nothing about it. Your post is why I drive a truck and I absolutely love my job.

It's not for everyone...and you'll know within 3-6 months whether or not you are cut out to be a truck driver. And some days will suck and you'll be stuck in traffic, but it will all be worth it when you find yourself driving down some empty 2 lane highway through cornfields and the sun is setting. That's the payoff right there.

The biggest negative about trucking? The complainers.

Thanks for good! Wife and I are getting ready to go to school then team drive. I have had a couple different careers already, USAF, and an aviation company. I am a firm believer that a base, job, or place to live is what YOU make of it.
From our research and talking with others, we have also found that the trucking world is VERY much related to the motorcycle world, which I have also been heavily involved in for several years, MSF instr, and motorcycle shop, and several riding groups along the way. Most will help you any way they can, and give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. There are always a few in any group of people that are the exception, the 2% of the group.
Again, thanks for the positive outlook, looking forward to joining the ranks soon and enjoying those sunrises, storms, and even relaxing while "parked" on an interstate. :lol:

When I got in the the truck with my trainer before we left on our first trip he told me trucking you will either love it or hate it,its not a job its a lifestyle,that was 14 years ago being single it could be a very good job for you to do get paid to see the country.
