PSST, That's OTR drivers and it is more like:
Work 100+
Log 70
Get paid for 40

Us UNION drivers do it this way:
Log 50-60 hours
Get staight time for 40 hours
Get time and half for 10-20 hours
Sleep in our own beds at night
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, since this guy is single with no wife and kids, he might just like it. Being on his own, traveling the interstates. Just remember, IT'S A LIFESTYLE. Some like OTR, some hate it. Me, I never did OTR so I don't really know what it is truely like. When I did go out of town, the company paid for a hotel. 2-3 day trips. The last company that I worked for I did two over night trips a week(m-t, th-f) and used a sleeper but it was dedicated. Now, if I stay out a night, we get hotels.

I love thinking to myself when I leave the warehouse "God, I'm glad I don't have to stay here and work". Instead, I make more money and get to go drive around all night, take a break when I feel like it, stop at a 7-11 for a soda or whatever whenever I want without having a boss or co-worker on my back.

I'm not exactly a "People Person", so I've found a niche that lets me be left alone and do what I consider to be fun and still make a living.

Look.... here is trucking and here is what you do. You pick up someone elses crap, and deliver it, and then you pick up some more crap and deliver it. In the meantime you'll drive down the interstate and after awhile, all Interstates look the same, the same truck stops, the same idiots , its all the same.

If your lucky, you'll get a challenging place to go like Chicago or New York
pass the crack pipe! too funny...I love your synopsis of the trucking lifestyle...this could be said for most any job...the bottom line here is find something you can tolerate..I worked in a factory for 22 years...being around the same assh**les everyday really gets old quick...at least driving a truck you eliminate that. 8)

Guess you haven't been to any truckstops lately. Or grocery warehouses. Or DC's. Or on the road with 4-wheelers. Shipping/Receiving department, guardshack, DOT. etc

I've heard all the BAD stuff about being a trucker...what are the GOOD reasons? Are there any?

I"m single, no kids. Thanks in advance for any advice!

The cure? The cure is NOT to flood the airways with your stupid ads, hire non-English speaking drivers, do more studies, rent more billboards, pay every joker a $500 fee for finding you a driver, or any of your other idiotic methods for "curing" this so-called "driver shortage". It is to KEEP the drivers you already have, pay them for their endless time in parking lots, pay them a decent rate that's higher than what they were paid in the 1980's, and give them more time home than 1 day every 7.
I agree Evinrude, however THAT will never happen, it makes TOO much sense !! 8)

Good things for trucking for me?

I drive 2 days out of the week at the most. I get paid to watch & work concerts from the best seat in the house. I get to drive down roads and dock in lots that no truck should ever drive down and noone will stop me because the show won't go on without my cargo: the PA.

Hat Rak;

My understanding was that the work of a driver working concert tours (rock concerts, C/W, etc.) was very demanding and rather grueling. I'm rather suprised to see that you only drive about two days out of the week.

How many miles do you average between shows?? Are you responsible for overseeing the loading/unloading of equipment?/ What kind of driving background (bedbugger, for example??) do production companies like drivers to have??

Could you discuss your work in more detail?? I know that there have been several others who have posted, wanting to know more about it.

Truth be told, this would probably make for an interesting thread topic all on it's own!!

Thanks!!
