Cheating the book is essentially telling a lie. Eventually you have to tell more lies to back up the original lie and you will forget what the original lie was, and then you'll get bit in the ass.

When I first started driving I wanted to be a "good" employee and a "team" player so I "fudged" on my logs at every chance I had.

After doing this for several months I finally came to the conclusion that it is just not worth it.

After I stopped cheating on my logs I noticed a few things.

I was less stressed
Better rested
More productive.

Which all translated into bigger paychecks.

I run for Crete and they demand that you run %100 legal. They audit your logs regularly and do not tolerate any "creative" logging.

I'm running 100% legal at all times and will earn over $65K this year. There are drivers that make more with other companies or running on their own and there are far more that make less. It's just a matter of doing your research and driving for a company that supports it's drivers by keeping them moving instead of sitting around waiting to get loaded/unloaded.

Running legal is your choice. If you're working for a company that expects you to run illegal, or if you feel you must run illegal to get the miles you need, perhaps it is time to look elsewhere for employment.

When you get paid for literally everything you do and are not tied to a simple mileage pay system alone there is absolutely no need to fudge, cheat, bend, etc.!

I log 100% by the book and make a very comfortable, happy living and take off tons of hometime. Yes, that means logging ALL of my line four time regardless of duration (not just fifteen minutes because it can be gotten away with) be it fueling, vehicle inspections, loading/unloading, drop-and-hook, safety classes, etc. It also means that if I sit in traffic for an extended period of time delayed, it gets logged accordingly.

This is not meant to ruffle feathers, but, there is a difference between running 100% legal and, 100% by the book :wink:.

Default Everyone Cheats and everyone lies!

Few will admit it, but everyone cheats sometimes and everyone lies about cheating. Pre-Trips are not done as required by eveyone, but everyone will lie to protect them sleves

I'll admit the only way I will cheat, is using a calculator. as an example, If I drove 120 miles and it took me 2 and a half hours actually driving it, I will divide the 120 by 62 and log it as 2 hours. It gives you an extra hour or so to drive.

This is, of course, "speed averaging" and IS a form of cheating. However, it allows you to get more miles, and therefore pay, in a day. If it does NOT allow you to drive past the 14 hour limit, I see no reason why the fmcsa or DOT should object. After all.... the purpose of the new HOS rules is to make sure you are not behind the wheel after "working" for more than 14 hours. Of course, there is that pesky 11 hour rule, but I believe you probably took some breaks in there, right? Since they no longer allow us to "extend" our day to compensate for breaks, it is reasonable that we should be allowed to "work" (our work is driving) for as many hours as we feel safe to do within that 14 hour "window."

Of course, this is just my opinion, and is not refelcted in the rules.
