The wheelbase law is definitely true, although I think you can get a permit for anything over 244". I know of a few guys that have 379x's, they don't have a permit and don't care!

I was just told today by a driver going to canada that I can not go no more wittt just a birth certtificate and CDL, one needs aa passport with photo or no crossing into winter wonderland.... but just go try and find out for sure so we all know....

The days of visiting Tijuana or Vancouver with nothing but your driver’s license and a smile are soon to be over. As of January 8, 2007, air and sea travelers will be required to present a passport or other approved form of I.D. as a result of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). This applies to all travelers to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

As of January 1, 2008, land travel will be included as well. The specifics for land travel have not yet been determined.
Approved forms of documentation include Merchant Mariner Document (which you aren’t going to get unless you join the coast guard) or the Air NEXUS card and possibly the Border Crossing Card, in addition to the standard passport. Passports can take up to six weeks to process, so if your travel plans include flights or boat travel in to one of the countries in question, I would get on the ball. You can get information on passports through the Department of State website.

Passports WILL NOT be required to return to the United States from U.S. territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Cruise ships fall under the land or sea crossing rules. However, pleasure boat and ferry passengers will be subject to the land crossing regulations.

That article you posted was regarding air travel, not land travel.

Air travel this year, land travel next year.

i am Canadian and i can tell you this
H.O.S is not like U.S.A its 13 hrs driving 3 hours off duty 8 hrs sleeper
you have to make sure that you have enough hours to cross and the time you spend on the boarder consider on duty not driving
there is zero tolerance for weeping and you can not have any alchohool
you can not come to the boarder with out clearance from your broker and there must be 2 hours window between getting clearance and the time you arrived by the way there is a fine of $2000 for the driver if he come to the boarder without what i mentioned before check with your company
the nearest truck stop near Niagara is fort Eire really nice clean truck stop its about few miles from Niagara
we use metric system the roads are in K.M not in Miles the seeped on the highway is 100K.m per hour but 4 lane high way 80 K.M on tow lane high way
we use Canadian $ with 1 USA $=1.14 CD$
the country is very clean and very safe

My dad runs Canada 99% EVERY trip and told me "abooot" following canadian regs up there and the states. he mentioned, something like, if hes there 10 days, the last 3 prior to entering the US can be logged under US regs, or something like that. Either way, it sounds complicated, but there IS a difference in the way each of us (US/Canada) do logging.
