I'm sorry, but I don't think it's SAFE to let a new driver drive while I sleep.

If TransAm can't give me solo runs with a new driver then I'll resign. It's as simple as that.
And why would a new guy want to run with someone that hasn't driven but a few months? What exactly do you have to offer him for advise?
I'm against new DOT rules and regsm, and a LOT of the Old ones, but this is the perfect case for them to set up a minimum time to become a "Trainer"

Gives the trainer a better look at how the trainee is reacting to situations and driving yet your still right there watching over them. That is fine with me but only after a few weeks on the truck and right before the trainee is about to be turned loose. Might notice something that needs to be fixed.

Trainers need to have at least a full year under them, that way they have hopefully driven in all weather conditions in a truck. I shudder at the thought of a trainer and trainee trying to go thru winter together and it's a first for both of them.
I think one year is a bare minumum and not every driver would be qualified as a trainer after only one year driving experience. Some drivers shouldn't be trainers, ever. They have absolutly no training ability. I would rather be trained by someone with six months experience, that knows what his limited experience is and is working every day to better himself, than to be trained by some Billy Big Rigger, who thinks he knows it all and has the attitude "my way or the highway." No, that wouldn't work, let's try "my way or the curb."

I had no problem with my trainer sleeping after three weeks on the road. Actually, I wouldn't have cared if he slept after the first day. I may not have been driving a big truck all my life, but I have been driving for over 35 years. Driving is driving. Training is a whole different skill.

No, I have been reading his post. I am not defending him in particular.

I have no idea what a P & M post means.

But I noticed he’s had a busy 6 mouths.
Between changing jobs, accidents, speed trap problems, I am wondering why he doesn’t seek out a trainer since he’s in need of one.

I may not know all there is (actually I KNOW I don't). But I want to level the field a little. I won't use my trainee to get miles, and I won't allow them to speed. That being said, I will train them to do what is LEGAL and SAFE to the best of my ability.
.......OK, but lets see how long it takes for you to be seduced by the "dark side"....where miles=$$ and you gotta have more. How many "years" of experience do you have now? :?

The "dark side" is only chosen by those who cant manage their time correctly and find themselves running illegal log books, speeding and other forms of stupidity.

No sign of the OP since he started this thread. He had to realize he was setting himself up for some grief. But we are talking about Spencerian here so who the hell knows.

Ive got to agree with the posters on this topic.

I drive for Werner, was asked many times by my FM that I would make a good trainer and should go to the training course and become one. I almost did, But came to my senses at the last minute.

I was a full time Flight Instructor for 10yrs, I know I am capable of teaching a trainee how to be a "Truck Driver".

Ive been driving for Werner for 5yrs but I will never be a trainer with this company or any company that uses the "team concept" to teach trainees. The only way to teach is if the truck is ran "solo" trips only, and both "drivers" are logging the appropriate "on-duty" time at the same time. Sleep will only occur when the truck is stationary. You are teaching the trainee to be a solo driver not a team driver.

Their is no way the trainee is getting the proper training when he is left to his own devices (?) when left unsupervised while driving or is unable to observe the trainer when riding. If the trainee is driving and you are in the bunk, you are unable to see circumstances that may be occuring that you could easily beable to correct before a tragedy occurs.

You will get little if any sleep while the trainee is driving your truck, and you will still be required to drive when the trainee's driving time is up.

You never know what kind of person, you will get when you change trainees, Pshycos, non bathers, wachos, racist, pervs, you name it. Like another poster stated, the companies "screening process" leaves alot to be desired.

Not to mention the little bit of "freetime" you may get out here to actually stop and smell the roses, and enjoy some of the places you may like to see, will not be happening. The only places you will get to stop and "enjoy" are Fuel Islands, Shippers/Consignees, and your terminals.

You will not have the option to run you Psuedo team truck as a solo, it is not your choice.

The only ones that benefit from the Training trucks are your dispatcher and company. Unless you are doing it only for the extra dollars. IMO its not worth the extra dollars.
