I'm gonna be a trainer!!!

I applied at TransAm to be a trainer. They told me yesterday I was approved. So I go to training class on the 13th!

I may not know all there is (actually I KNOW I don't). But I want to level the field a little. I won't use my trainee to get miles, and I won't allow them to speed. That being said, I will train them to do what is LEGAL and SAFE to the best of my ability.

.......OK, but lets see how long it takes for you to be seduced by the "dark side"....where miles=$$ and you gotta have more. How many "years" of experience do you have now? :?

I too, wish to be a trainer. I have decided that I would wait until I have at least one year of experience at a minimum. It may be much longer than that. I have mixed feelings about the minimum time required to be a trainer. Even if you only have six months experience, that is six months more than your trainee. He can still learn a tremendous amount from you. I don't have strong feelings about the minimum time requirement.

spencerian 07-04-2007 06:46 AM

Ah, 6 months of experience.

There is no seduction either. I don'y run their illegal way. So why would I team drive with a new guy?

That's the thing. If I can't make it safely and legally why do it?
I'm sorry, but I don't think it's SAFE to let a new driver drive while I sleep.

If TransAm can't give me solo runs with a new driver then I'll resign. It's as simple as that.

Never so true! 99% of the fleets out there are NOT looking for trainers! They are looking for people to babysit/ fill in the gaps for crummy planning and dispatching. If you buck the trainer team theory that some of these over educated business types have created, you will not be a "trainer" very long. In my never to be humble opinion, Drivers who are planning to be trainers should have at LEAST 5 years of all weather / terrain experience before they even consider training. They should also demand or pay for a REAL trainer course at a certified technical college that offers the courses

Be careful dude! You are getting lined up to be a CHEAP team...

I've never heard anything more ridiculous in my life. How much of that six months have you actually spent driving? Between job searching and orientations maybe 4 months at best? You don't even know your own mind yet (trucking wise) and yet you are going to impart a paltry 4 months of accumulated wisdom to somebody else? You are still a rookie for crying out loud?!?!?!?! By your own admission all of your trucking experience up to this point has been bad, what could you possibly have to offer? You have no clue what makes a good driver yet you have the knowledge to turn a trainee into one? Unbelievable, totally unbelievable.
