Obeying the speed limit, etc. (Religious Overtones)

If I was directing my post at anyone, it was golfhobo more than anyone else because he wrote that speeding is not sin.
You, in your little ditty to the politicians, mentioned that the pretend YOU should be his advisor because YOU are a realist. Obviously, YOU wouldn't be right for the job, because YOU are a "literalist" and a "legalist." There is MUCH discussion both in and out of the religious community about whether or not the Bible should be taken "literally." YOU have shown which side of that argument you are on. I am NOT finding any fault with you for your choice, but you need to realize which camp you are in. The fact IS.... that the legal system IS based on a "realist" view of adherence to laws. How else can you explain a cop sitting in a construction zone (with fines doubled) and NOT stopping the "flow" of traffic that is doing, as you say, about 10 over? Or one that PASSES you in the same zone doing 5 mph faster than YOU? Could it be that they have decided that a SAFE speed would be 65, so they post it at 55, knowing full well what the result will be? That being that the flow of traffic will be at or near the "desired" speed of 65! What about the caution signs for off ramp speeds? Sharp curve ahead!.... 45 mph!! Could it BE that they have tested somehow and KNOW that a vehicle can safely negotiate the curve at 55??? But.... if they SAY 55, there will be accidents! I think the politicians are a LOT smarter than you give them credit for. THEY are realists.... and understand the American psyche. And I believe Jesus was, TOO!

le·gal·ism
le·gal·ism [l?g’l ìzz?m] (plural le·gal·isms) n 1. adherence to letter of law: strict adherence to a literal interpretation of a law, rule, or religious or moral code 2. law law term: a word or phrase in legal jargon 3. christianity belief in necessity of good deeds: the belief that good deeds are required for entrance into Heaven Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. I do not know if this is the best dictionary. The cut and paste function didn't carry over some of the fonts so that is the reason for the apparrent errors. I believe the "Christian" circles and the Bible study we have deal with definition 3. I do not believe that one can do enough good to warrant entrance into heaven so in that sense of the term I am not a legalist. I believe that once a person repents and believes in Jesus, the good deeds naturally flow out of him (if he continues living ie. the thief on the cross) as a result of his belief. The stronger a person's belief is in God, the closer he comes to living out the phrase "I breathe therefore I do good". The libertine seems to believe one can profess a belief in God and continue to go on living as he always has. Some make surface changes that I think may be judged as trying to appease God. In my view, actions must agree with words. Actions are a better measure of belief than words are. I believe I am characterized by many to be a "legalist, fundamentalist, born again Christian nutjob". I take exception to the "born again" title though because that refers to an event and is not a permanant noun. Do people who don't consider themselves to be "born agains" call themselves "borns"? I guess I can be properly be referred to as "alive one". golfhobo, I missed half of a post you gave on page 2. I didn't see any edits so I don't know how I missed it. Check back for more replies. Edited 2 times, once to add a paragraph right after the post was submitted and once to correct punctuation.

I think we can say that a reason for law is to declare the way something is supposed to be so penalties can be given for crossing clearly defined lines. Can we also say that law is supposed to offer protection for those that remain within its boundaries?
If someone is doing 14 in a 15 mph school zone and someone behind him tries to pass him and crashes into a truck in the oncoming lane, how can the person within the boundaries of the law be culpable? If he is held responsible whatsover, the legal system is corrupt! The vehicle and traffic law (and most law in general) is designed to elliminate accidents for those who adhere to it. What do you suppose the percentage of accidents is where there is no moving violation? Edited to correct grammar

All I've got to say is I'm 70 feet long and upwards of 40tons. Cars can get around me if they so wish so I do my own thing and keep myself safe. If I get a 4 wheeler riding my ICC then its his own fate he's gambling with.. I'm not going to speed up to give him more room because then I risk having to stop suddenly and killing someone infront of me. I just cruise in the right lanes and do my thing and let the lil 4 wheelers do their own thing too.

Chap, please qote the verse that says it IS a sin. What? You say you can't FIND it... because they didn't have cars back then? Hmmm.... well, they DID have chariots. I don't remember seeing a single word telling a man how he should drive his chariot.
Titus 3:1 (KJV)
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 1 Peter 2:13-15 (KJV) Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; [14] Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. [15] For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: Both Paul and Peter were in agreement that followers of Jesus ought to submit to those who had charge over them. Paul went mostly to the Gentiles and Peter mostly to the Jews. To those who say that this only applied to that time period; What event caused a change in the commandment or it to be bad to obey ordinances of men and governments in charge that did not go against the law of God?
How would one cop or even a group of cops be able to enforce speeding laws with some level of equality if they pulled everyone they could over? If they pull one or a couple over, drivers will be driving at the same speed as the person they are giving the tickets to. If people get pulled over for a couple mph over the limit, even if they knew they were speeding, they would pull out all the stops to get off; ie calibration of the instruments, proof that they got the right vehicle because he was driving at the same speed as everyone else, etc. This would clog the already overcrowded courts and as far as I know, most cops do not like doing paperwork and spending days in traffic court. They want the easy ones where it is obvious the guy was way over so he could plea down or just plead guilty. About the warning signs around curves and on ramps, I believe that it has been proven that tractor trailors can fall on their side doing the posted speed on some yellow warning signs of on ramps. I believe the more people adhere to the laws of society, (if they are good laws) the less enforcement is required. There would also decrease accidents, etc. This alone could increase the standard of living of that society. |
 :P :?
