The “Driver Shortage” is a Myth…kinda. I mean if the one advertises for say, Bank Tellers for $5 an hour and none applied the Bank Manager might say he has a “Bank Teller” shortage. “I advertised but we just can’t seem to fill all the positions needed”? UhHuh.
The truth is most major Truck Companies just don’t want to pay the wages that are necessary to fill the seats. At the 2005 “Trucking Carriers Conference” in Atlanta the Major Trucking Carriers (In attendance that week) came to the conclusion that to fill the needed empty seats and significantly reduce the driver turnover rate, ave. annual driver wages would have to be raised to $60,000 to $65,000.
According to this article it seems none of the carriers were too happy with this solution. So, they agreed to funnel $50 million into a DC lobby group to ensure ”Guest Worker” programs, allow immigrant (Mexican) workers to obtain CDL’s, and provide funding for their training (for free!). The article stated, “it seems the plan is not just to fill empty seats but to replace a major portion of the American drivers with much less expensive immigrant (Mexican) drivers, as much as 70% over five years”!
The article went on to state, “To get HB1 visa’s for these workers the rules state the job must be posted for two weeks with no qualified American applicants before the position can be filled by a guest worker. The positions must pay equivalent wages and benefits. How do they (The largest Carriers meeting in Atlanta that day) plan to circumvent this rule/requirement? Change the job description so there is no wage or benefit comparisons. Start everyone at very low “training wages” so no American driver would consider the position. With labor turnover at 130% a company just needs to let a truck sit idle for two weeks then fill it with an immigrant (Mexican) worker”! Here’s the paper if you’d like to see the entire article:

And what about “Attestments”. I understand there is a big move to allow attestments instead of the red tape to get a H1B Visa for a “guest worker”. A HB2 Visa has No requirement for “Labor Certification”. One just “attests” that one tried to hire 100 new drivers….. but alas, no Americans applied (for 19 cents per mile!) Please Homeland Security send me 100 Mexican “guest workers” to fill these jobs!
I guess Bank Tellers are next. I mean if I was a bank manager and had 15 tellers working at say $18 per hour might I “Attest” I need new ones (Trainees) for $5 per hour. “Hello Banco Popular Mexico City… yes, please send me 15 of your best tellers”.
What about the Manager at your neighborhood Walgreens. He’s making $67,500 a year. I’ll just send for Pedro from Matzalan, Mexico, he’s been managing the Farmacia there for 20 years now. He’d be happy to do it for $15,000 per year!
This movie is coming to your neighborhood soon!
