That isn't the worst of it. The poor driver who has a defective hymanburg compensator all dried out, and your truck pegs out at 65.9mph now yer looking at a $2000 fine.

 

If you don't want speed limiters in trucks, you need to take advantage of the comment time to express your views. Be concise and factual in your opposition. Write and/or call your congressman to see if they will take a stand against having speed limiters in trucks. As I recall, Ontario had a law that forced truckers to limit speeds of trucks. I believe that legislation was later changed. It isn't any other province but Ontario that was involved in the speed limiter issue, as I recall. If you don't like a bit of legislation that is being proposed, don't just complain about it on a trucking forum. Take action. Write and make phone calls. I guarantee you that those on the other side will make their views known. What these politicians and special interests may not be telling about speed is that the speed limiters won't make any difference with accidents. Drivers can still speed through work areas and places where posted speeds are lower than what the speed limiters will allow. It isn't speed that causes accidents. It is the poor judgment of the drivers. Besides, they may not be telling the entire story. Of those accidents reported I wonder how many the truck driver was a fault and what percentage had the 4 wheeler at fault?

 

Is that for everyone? Even for owner operators?
You know them outlaws ain't going for that! What about older trucks? 359's, old W9's etc? How do they install limiters on them?

This finally broke as national news yesterday, the trucks from 1990 and back, are grandfathered in the current proposal to not be limited, so as I said, we will see a run on the older trucks! The problem is that the ATA has joined the private group that is pushing this. The ATA is looking to the fuel savings mainly.

More than likely, owner ops won't have a choice, to register with DOT you will have to submit to having the limiter installed via the ECU. You don't agree, your not legal to run then, that is how they will force everyone to do it. And they will prolly start making manufacturers change the gearing to limit the overall top speed for new trucks, no way around it then without some serious money having to be dropped!

As GMAN said, make your voice heard, it's not set in stone to happen yet. Many seem to favor 68 mph if the limit comes in.

 

Everything is going dumb. Common sense has gone out the window.

 

The head of the private group pushing this lost their son years back to a single truck that was "speeding" at 8 mph over the limit............the truck plowed into the back of the stopped car. So how fast was the truck going then? I can't find that info.

Some outlets are now quoting the FMCSA as saying this will only be on new models, no retrofitting to previous models....as in, only on vehicles in the 2017 model and beyond.

 

All due respect Mr. Ford. Looks like there is too much momentum on this one. If the ATA is behind this reg.......not a whole lot the individual can do at this point. (IMHO)

How quickly we forget. What about the 'safety oriented' CRETE driver that drove over top of seven children and a mother a few years back? After driving for something like 34 hours! I think that CRETE's "OUR BEST RESOURCE IS SITTING HERE" trailers are the ultimate asskiss to the FedDot." LOL I bet those poor schmucks hate pulling those trailers. Oh my god! So horrible to see those things. What a joke. Albeit, a very very bad one.

Agreed, this has nothing to do with speed. Regulation is what this is about.

Yes Belpre, it's coming but make your voice heard as to what the max limit should be. They haven't decided on the limit and would like to hear opinions so they say! The heads of the group want 55 mph, the FMCSA wants 65 but would be fine with 68. Personally, at this point I could care less. Only road near me that is above 65, I rarely go that far South. Anyways, my current truck tops out at 68 but I tend to sit at 65 as my max.

 

.....I know.... ... we could form a National Truckers Strike.
