Oh I'm sorry Rev I thought you were goofing around with this thread, I didn't realize you were going to post your experience with Landstar or I wouldn't have responded as I did. Having said that, I think it's great you're willing to share because I've read both good and bad comments on Landstar but nothing detailed. If what I'm working on doesn't work out Landstar might be an option later, I think they require a year experience.

Also, I'd be interested to know how deep of a discount you get on tires. I'm pricing four right now and the best price so far has been 335.00 (mounting included) for a set of KDA Kellys. He also gave me a price of 447.44 for Michelin XDA-HT or a set of Chinese tires for 305.00 installed. If it's too big of a pain don't bother but I was just curious.

What kind of a difference in rates do you see between van and flat? or even steps?

The reason I ask is that I heard that with the weak dollar our exports right now are going strong and you think that would bode well for vans and maybe steps and DDrops if we're exporting equipment. It can't all go to the ports via rail.

That's why I'm posting it.

I can get those Michelin XDA-HT's for $371.56 each, according to the LCAPP website.

Not a lot. They currently have 330 reefer loads available in the US, most paying around $2.20 per mile (those are old loads that nobody has accepted, however, so I don't know how much the ones that got accepted go for. That is also the gross rate, as I don't know what the percentage breakdown is for reefer).

I've noticed in the last week or so that dry van is catching up to flatbed. Step decks have always seemed to go for a bit more (around $2.82 per mile from the quick glance of my area, same thing about old loads, and you get 73% of that).

I am not giving up
but I have no confidence in the economy
my main account is a 3 day ltl run
if people stop spending $ in restaurants
(I supply US Foods,Northstar etc)
Then I need to explore all avenues.
At best I depend on a "busy" season which is starting right about now
veggies from Fla
Nursery loads etc
send the reefers away from my area
resort areas start opening up
and my ltl trailer is loaded to the ceiling
I am not so sure that it is smart right now
to expect additional broker freight to be readily available this summer

No detention time. I knew this going in, but the loads pay well enough, and turn over fast enough to justify it. 10 of those 19 hours were sleeper berth, as I was out of hours. I was told by other LS drivers that sometimes the turnaround is quick, sometimes it is slow - it really all depends on demand at these manufacturing facilities. There are three places that these loads go to, and they all pay good.

I've already talked to the broker, and I'm going to get back for another load on Monday. I'd like to do 2 1/2 round trips per week if possible, take a 34 hour reset over the weekend, and take every 4th week of the month off entirely.
