I hope you're sitting down for this. Remember - these rates are gross figures (and they really are grotesque). These are dry van:

100 mile radius of Houston, TX to GA: $1.28 - $1.46 per mile
100 mile radius of Houston, TX to NC: $1.12 - $1.42 per mile (and those include FSC if you can believe that)
100 mile radius of Houston, TX to VA: No results found

100 mile radius of Houston, TX to MA: $1.67 - $1.68 per mile
100 mile radius of Houston, TX to NH: No results found
100 mile radius of Houston, TX to ME: No results found

100 mile radius of Boston, MA to TX: $1.43 per mile
100 mile radius of Wilmington, NC to TX: No results found

IMHO, if you want to run Texas or Florida, don't look at Landstar as an option. The dry van rates for both of those states absolutely suck here. You can get some good rates in Florida and Texas running Intrastate (anywhere from $2.00 - $3.00 per mile), but if you want to run Interstate in either of those two states, you'll get hosed.

These are gross stepdeck figures:

Houston Texas to GA: $3.05 per mile
Houston to VA: No loads found
Houston to NC: No loads found

Houston to MA, NH, or ME: No loads found

Return trips: No loads found


I could search flatbed and probably find a lot more loads that could be pulled on a stepdeck.


BUT, just to give you an idea of the variation: I was ignoring calls all day that were running from PA out to CT, NY, and MA that were paying in the $2.75 - $3.00 range. The only reason being that I didn't want to go in that direction.

Well, I'm under another one of my military shipments heading to Michigan. Pay is the same as before:

$1700 gross L/H ($1105 my cut)
$204 FSC
550 dispatched miles (which will be more like 660 with my deadhead)

From there, I am working on booking a load of trees out of MI going to either OH or IL. Several stops, all in the same area. They pay decent, but will be a lot of manual labor tailgating them. Quick turnaround, though - A day and a half tops. Then I can get one more trip in, and call it a week.

It sounds as if the military stuff is going to be picking up even more. The origin warehouse just kicked a bunch of guys out for complaining about where they were being given loads to (one of the things about these militaries is that you have no control over where your shipment is going to - it all depends upon what they have to load when your name comes up on the list). On top of that, the assembly plants that are building these things just got some $100 million + contracts from the military to build more of them. They are predicting within the next few weeks that everything will be at full capacity, at which point my turnaround on these loads will drop quite a bit. Plus, it might make it possible for me to get in on the other end of these trips - delivering stuff to the warehouse in PA. Time will tell, but it looks like it is going to be a busy spring.

What a difference a day makes. Since I pulled into the assembly plant at around 1 AM this morning, I figured I'd crash here til morning. The tree loads that I called about yesterday morning were all gone, but they hinted that there might be more of them today. Well, while I was waiting for a call back on them, I got a phone call from the agent who handles the military stuff I haul. She gave me 3 options for trips to get me back to PA for another load. Here's the one I picked:

Load empty wooden axle racks right at the assembly plant in MI, and take them to Arvin Meritor in Maxton, NC. Then grab a load of axles at the plant in Maxton and take them up to PA. Today is a good day. 8)

Total (gross) linehaul: $4000 (my cut comes to $2600)
FSC: $480
Dispatched miles: 1202
Deadhead miles: ZERO

That should put me in PA some time on Friday, at which point I can still snag one more shipment heading to OH or Michigan. At that point, I will likely head back home for the weekend (not sure if I'll do it empty or loaded yet - I'll see if I can find myself a short trip running over the weekend up to WI), and let them know that I am available for one of their trips out of WI or IL heading to PA.

Rev...looks like you've hit a sweet spot for freight with the military shippers. Nice find....keep those LS agents on your're good side. Find out their birthdays and send a small gift...you know, butter em up 8)
