Well I'm sitting here in Baytown, TX killing some time before I load this afternoon so thought I'd go ahead and post an update.

I took my son (whose home from college) out with me on this run and we left out of the house last week. Our 1st load took us from San Antonio to Las Vegas, NV. My son has never been there so this was going to be a fun trip. We loaded on a Thursday but it couldn't deliver until the following Monday whick was O.K. because it gave us time to explore good ole "Sin City".

We got there Saturday morning and checked into a hotel for the weekend (stayed at Circus Circus because the have truck parking). Our first stop was at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.....for those of you that are familar with the TV program "Pawn Stars" that's the shop. It was pretty cool to check out but unfortunately we didn't get to see any of the guys that star in it.

It was 104 degrees that day so after the pawn shop we headed back to the hotel to littlerly chill out. When the sun set and all the lights came on we walked up and down the entire strip. Darting in and out of all the major Hotel Casinos checking out the sites not to mention a little drinking and gambling along the way. My boy can walk for hours and miles and some how this old man was able to keep up with him, not that I didn't feel it the next day though.

Anyways, come Monday I delivered the load and bounced up to Nellis AFB and loaded 2 Humvees going to Hawthorne. After unloading in Hawthorne we stopped at Walter lake as my son was hoping to go swiming. He found out real quick that even though it was hot there, the water was COLD .

Our next load was out of Herlong, CA so we bounced up to Sparks, NV. My son wanted to check out Reno so I was going to drop my trailer and bobtail into town. Well my son the "walker" heard from an employee in the Petro that there was a trail that went along the river all the way into town. So you guessed it, we walked. It was actually a nice walk and was only a few miles. We had a good time.

We bounced up to Herlong and loaded one miltary flatbed trailer going to Salina, KS. Once we kicked that off we bounced over to Ft. Riley, KS and loaded a 5'x5' military container weighing a whopping 2k and took it to the port in Beaumont, TX. It was extermly easy to load and paid VERY well but unfortunately was a "hot" load and had to be delivered the following morning, otherwise I would have been looking to fill the rest of my deck with some "gravy".

We are now sitting in Baytown killing time untill this afternoon when I'll load in La Porte heading to Seguin. Once thats off we'll bounce the few miles home where I'll take the rest of the week off.

Woo-Hoo!!

Thanks for the update, Brother. Always a pleasure to read about how you are doing. If your son is still with you he isn't missing anything here other than hot weather and good 'ole Hampton Roads traffic. Of course, my dad lives in San Antonio and he was telling me the weather there is hot....hot...hot...with no chance of rain.

I get a little lazy in updating and although my intentions are always good, the laziness gets the better of me .

My son is still here, he'll be heading to San Deigo next month for a one month "tour" aboard various ships and subs as part of his NROTC summer cruise.

You dad is correct, been hot here in South Texas with no chance of rain in the forecast. The heat is never the problem here, it's the high humidity that can make it miserable. With that said, wouldn't you know it, our HVAC is acting up and not cooling like it should so I gotta get the AC guy out here.

Just a question. Which would be better right now at Landstar, a stepdeck or a flatbed?

That is good to know! I am going to know by the end of the week if I need to move to West Texas.....and LS is probably my best chance to make the money I will need to make...and still be at home, when I need to be at home. There isn't a lot of tank work out there, that isn't already over run with trucks.

Thank you DD.

I thought you would be pulling a tank around for some time. If you speak with their recruiting department they can give you a printout of loads and rates for a specific area. Of course, it will only be for a single day, but could give you an idea of what to expect. Another thing you could check out is their broker board. www.landstarbroker.com. The rates are not listed, but the loads that are available to other carriers are listed. When you talk with the recruiters you may ask if they can give you the name of a couple of agents that pull freight out of the area where you want to run.
