But really...in my situation I just want to make back my investment and make a little for me....lets say I did run 110,000 miles at 1.10 a mile, hauling 300lb freight....(round it of to a 1,000lbs make it lil more plausable)
My feul cost will be roughly 40c per mile cuz weight is so low, leaving 77,000 gross for me....got my initial investment back and a little $ (bout 43k) in my pocket, sure I'd like more, but just wondering simple economics here.

$/loaded mile on all trips for the last 6 months. Numbers underlined include detention and/or storage. 90% of all trips are between 400-500 miles. Step decks and double drops. February was snowy month and we couldn't get out much. I found it really difficult to find good paying fright in April...hence only 4 loads.

THAT is the kind of mentality that will get you nowhere in the industry. It doesn't matter if your overhead is low...you don't know what my cost is. My truck is PAID FOR. I ran about 45k miles last year, and had a 1099 of $128k. I only ran 8 months of last year, and that 8 months includes only one month of peak season, so if I ran like I should, it would have been significantly higher. What is that? $2.85 a mile? That's every mile that truck turned last year. It is the mentality that "I don't have any bills, so I'll run just to cover my expenses" that turned the industry to shit. That kinda freight is the fast way to a net income of $20k a year...what the hell is the point of putting up with the frustration, bs from the shippers, dealing with adverse weather conditions, weeks away from home, putting yourself in harms way everytime you pull out from the house for that kinda money??? After paying self-employment tax, insurance, health insurance, maintenance on the truck, fuel, and your personal expenses (assuming this is a paid for truck) You will be left with barely enough money to live on. Figure .24cpm fuel surcharge..if you turn a 1000 mile trip, that's only $240.00 your getting back on fuel, and figure it cost you (based off of 6mpg, and 250 gal tanks) $385.00 out of pocket for fuel on that trip. So, then that load that paid $1.10 per mile, leaves you with $715.00. Not factoring in other expenses...You load that shipment on a monday morning, get to your destination tuesday evening..they can't touch you til wed. morning..you get unloaded and have to sit til late that evening, find a load loading Thursday morning, going another 1000 miles...this time that badboy's paying $1.20 per mile (you got lucky, and found a big buck load). So figuring the fuel surcharge pays the same .24cpm, of the $1,200 you just made, you only pocketed $815.00. So, that's a whopping $1,530.00 you made that week after fuel.

My figures may be a little off, but I think it was a decent example of what I'm trying to get across.
