Yes but how many hours have you put in? With a higher labor job such as that, you can't really compare profit per mile.

Normally, I don't. But everyone here seems to do that, so I just play along.
I actually don't put that many hours in. I average less than 5000 miles a month, and sit around a lot. A loadup is a day (a day and a half at the most for a really big load). An unload is less than a day. Then I sit around and do nothing.
I haven't needed a 34 hour reset in almost 2 years. My 70 hour clock usually resets on its own after about 20-30 hours.

So you aren't killing yourself to make a crap load of money, because basically you don't have to. But would rather have a good quality of life.

I don't kill myself, but earn a decent living. I give my family a good quality of life, and that's what matters.

i`m not knocking the household movers but they always seem to knock me when I tell them how hard I run, I dont really see the point in taking it easy when i`m on the road, i`m gonna be out there regardless so I might as well go as hard as I can and not take it easy because I get good rates.
personally I can`t see how those bedbuggers deal with all the damn people

Nerves of Steal.... They can have it. I'll stick with the dry vans, Reefers, and flatbeds.

well this is kinda unusual . I pull a dry van for the auto parts, car factories. I go 100 miles a day and 500/week. 3 stops in Detroit and back to Toledo. I get $335 flat rate per day which is all of 4-5 hours depending how the construction runs through that day. So take $335 a day at 100/miles. That would mean that I get $3.35/mile/ I spend $265/week in fuel.

If running your butt off works for you, great. However, with that there is a trade off - your equipment wears out faster, you have greater expenses when it comes to maintanance and repairs, and your fuel costs are a lot higher.
Personally, I'd rather take my time, and keep my variable costs low.

Patience - lots of it.
I find dealing with the customers on a personal basis rewarding. I know that what I am doing is appreciated by every single one of my customers, and I always know they are glad I'm there.
I'll have around 50 shippers for the entire year, and I'll meet each one personally, they'll know me by name, and they'll know that if there is a problem, that they can call me day or night. I'll take that any day over bumping a dock and having to deal with some forklift driver who wouldn't give a squirt of piss for you.

Say you guys hauling furniture...just wondering?
I couldnt be a help but be a little jealous seeing your rates, but I couldnt help but wonder what the negative is.......ok I mean everythng has its up-n downs.
Was just wondering cuz I thnk I know it, how many whiny customers you get that refuse to pay their bill cuz they say you scratched something or some BS like that...people just can be really picky about their rat pack treasurers, what looks like a piece of crap they think is some valuable family heirloom? N God help you if you brake it or even scratch it.
So you guys get a lot of people wont pay I bet?
Yeah always thought the car-haulers were the elite of our buiz, good rates and close trips eh? Yeah but if I scratch that f'n Mercades on loading and unloading it bet there is hell to pay eh?

Damage claims can happen on any kind if freight. Even Walmart goods can get damaged. They might even load you with broken stuff and blame you.
I think the important thing is monitor the percent of claims you have.
I agree dealing with the public is more hassle, but you get paid extra for it. At least you should if you bid it right.
