Default Registration Question

I live on Long Island. I plan on running from PA to Upstate NY. I rent a spot to park my truck in PA. My LLC is registered in PA. Can I use the address where I park the truck to register the truck in PA? :?:

As long as you have a legal address for your company in Pennsylvania, I see no reason why you can't use that address. Some states are now requiring you to have a telephone number in the company name before allowing you to register it in their state. You need to ask Pennsylvania about their requirements. Since they will be sending you mail, they may require a physical address where you can receive mail from them.

Sounds like one for an attorney, tahawus. Better to check, and make sure you are "most likely legal" before you do something that might jeopardize your authority or whatever. I expect if you called DMV in New York, they would tell you that you must register there. But if there is a legal loophole with a clear advantage to you, go for it... IMHO. 8)

You could rent a mail box near where you park and call that your business address. Depending on the state it may not be legal but if you rent from a Mail Boxes, ect. type place where you get a suite# instead of a P.O. box you'll probably get away with it.

A good accountant will probably be able to give you good answers as well on this subject. Find one that deals with the transportation industry.

I am not sure you need a lawyer who specializes in trucking. Most any lawyer could give you the information you need. I would call the state you want to plate and ask them what they require. You may even be able to get the information off of their website.

You want to be sure your legal if you decide to do this. I use to work for a company that registered their trucks in OK because it was like half price from AL.

This worked until it was discovered that they along with many other companies in the US were just using OK to pay less registration fees.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but when they were found out to be not so legit in doing this, they had to pay a penalty, plus the back registration fees to AL.

There was a big stink about Oklahoma a few years ago. It was rather inexpensive to get your base plates and permits in that state. Illinois and some other states sued them and they will now only allow you to base there if you or an employee pays taxes in the state and you have a telephone and street address in the state. Most other states have gone to doing the same thing. I could tag my trucks in either Georgia or Tennessee since I have a legal address in both states. I chose Tennessee for tax reasons. In either state, I needed to have a street address for my business and a telephone number in the business name in the respective state. Since it was cheaper to do it in Tennessee, that was what I did. Both states list the requirements on their state government website. I suggest starting with that and if you aren't clear or the information isn't listed, then call Pennsylvania and ask them. You say your LLC is registered in Pennsylvania. Do you mean that you set it up in Pennsylvania or simply registered to do business in the state?

I dont care so much about the registation fees. I am concerneed with insurance costs. If I insure my truck as being garaged on Long Island, NY, cost for insurance is around 36,000$a year. If it is garaged in PA it costs around 9,000$ a year. I dont plan on going to Long Island anyway and I rather rent a spot and park it in PA when I am not using it. The lady at progressive told me I would have a problem registering it in NY the insurance is based off PA. Sorry I didnt explain all this early and thanks for all the help
