I've been using Efax and have a cheap HP Photosmart 3100 printer/scanner for $75.00 and the whole setup works great.

When I'm arraigning to get a load the broker sends me a carrier packet which is usually 13 pages long. I print it out and there are 2 or 3 pages that need information filled in. After that I go to Efax and click on the option to scan and fax. It asks me for each page until I'm finished then a fax number and bam, it's done!

I'm sure all of them are pretty much the same. You can check the rates online and pick the one that suits you.

I use eFax for incoming only. I don't have to, but to receive on the aircard the computer must be on all the time and I tend to keep mine off more than on so I find it easier to rec them through e-mail.

I send through my aircard. You can use the windows fax thing, but I didn't like the way it worked so I bought Winfax (about $100) and use it for all outgoing faxes. Don't know what eFax charges for out-going, but found the aircard to work great in this area.

eFax unlimited service used to be 13.95 but has recently gone to 16.95. The free service is only good for 20 pages per month.

Efax cancelled my free account because I had 30 pages in a month. I disputed their claim and it took 2 months for them to finally cancel me.

If you have the free account and someone is faxing to you ask them how many pages they are sending.

Maxemail lite is 24 dollars per year with 500 free incoming faxes or voice mail, your fax number has a voice mail box also. Your outbound faxes or 5 cents a piece. Works like a charm.

i do it this way i have a motorola cell phone i got motorola phone tools with the usb cable (radioshack has this for most phones) that way i can hook my phone to my laptop. when i do the computer thinks it's a phone modem and i can send and rec fax's right on my laptop. i have an HP 1200 all-in-one sitting i the overhead that way i can copy, scan, print or fax as needed.

i neat trick is sign a blink paper and store it on the laptop that way when you get a fax that you just need to sign and send back all you do in (word or works or what ever you are using to read then) do a cut and paste and fax it back you don't have to print it and sign it and then scan it to fax it. but you still have a copy on you laptop for later if you need it. works great for us

Ditto on what the other two said about USB data cables for your phone.
Make sure that the data cable is for your particular phone.
Each cellular phone is also a 19,600 baud modem with 14,400 baud fax capabilities which is better than most fax machines.

I use a USB data cable for my phone and a Canon Lide 60 USB scanner.
I prefer the USB scanner because it's one less power cable to deal with.

I use Winfax Pro 10.03 fax software because is has digital and analog cellular protocols.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Winfax Lite it will work just as well.

The difference between Winfax Pro and Lite is the Pro version has fancy cover pages and integrates with email.

For simplicity, the lite version will work just fine.

Your only cash outlay will be for the data cable (35.00) the scanner (45.00) and Winfax Pro which is around 100 bucks.

Your cellular airtime plan will cover the fax time.

Any fax generated over a computer is always much clearer than most fax machines and with the Canon Scangear toolbox your can set it for any color of paper.

I've used this setup for over ten years now with never a problem.

Sounds like you can't receive a fax unless the phone is plugged in though??? That wouldn't work for me as I get faxes without prior notification. I would do the Efax thing for sure, it works great for me!
