Is it worth it to get your own authority?
Probably not. First I would make make sure that there is absolutely no way Roadway, Yellow or UPS would hire you. I would say most o/o's should stay o/o's and just find better co's to lease to. I have my own authority for a year. Its not all its cracked up to be except its cool saying you have your own authority "yep. got me a reefa" Of the 10 or so people who I knew had their own authority a year ago, 3 of us are left most went to Landstar 2 went back to Triple Crown

Whether having your own authority is work it or not, depends on the individual. It can be difficult for the single truck operator to succeed running his own authority. I dont think that everyone who owns their own truck should necessarily also have their own authority. I also don't think that every driver should be an owner operator or own a truck. Most should stay a company driver. They will probably make more money. Owning a truck means that you are in business. If everyone had their own business there would be no employee's. When an owner operator gets his own authority, he takes on new and expanded responsibilities. As a carrier he is now responsible for a considerable increase in paperwork. Failure to maintain proper paperwork can result in high fines. While I think that many carrier's take a larger share of the line haul than they should, they do assume considerable liability from those with whom they lease on to them. So, is it worth it? For me it is.

Some people actually did fail.
others just moved on There were 3 other guys who worked for Atkinson, 2 of them went with Landstar and the other guy is making a royal killing $$$$$$$$$ but he teams with his wife and they get some really outragious prices hauling expedited refridgerated air freight. Another guy and his son started hauling Pocono Spring water. And soon expanded to buying tractors and hiring drivers etc. He's back to TCS hauling railboxes. When I asked him what happened he told me he could not afford Pa workmans comp. (thats kind of a different problem but to be considered if your dream is to own a fleet.) I know a couple guys at the fish market in Boston who are Landstar also. I think people figure out that if you are only going to work the loadboards then why kill yourself with regs. and paperwork. Just go with Landstar and its the same diffeerence. I thought of it myself but I am an idiot and actually like my weekly peddle run and the customers I deliver to.

Im getting lazy, and spoiled, but isn't that what good life is all about?

Actually, we don't have much slow time, except for Xmas to February, but i didn't work that time anyway. Yes, this year, is kinda slower than usual, for whatever reason. It's not that i couldn't run, it's just i'm kinda picky, and there is less staff to pick up from. But it's OK, for now, i'd rather make $13-1400 net(not just after fuel), in 2 days, than $16-1700 in a 5 days. I just hope it ain't get any worse, than i'd have to make some changes...
