Why cant we make money in deregulation?
#2
The answer is real simple. There are too many people running a truck who aren't business people. They think cash flow is profit. They don't know their costs of operations and are under capitalized. They believe that as long as they can keep moving they can make money and survive. They are so terrified of sitting for a day or two, they are willing to take anything for fuel money.

Unlike what I did this morning. I called into dispatch, and told them to find me something that would convince me to leave the house (where I've been since last Tuesday).
I love having a sound business plan.

It is simply AMAZING how many folks don't know the difference between cash flow and profit!!! I hear drivers bragging about all the money they making, yet they are behind on all payments!
You hit the nail on the head. This is a business and a business has to make a profit to stay in business.

Well it does not help when news drivers who become O/O's go out and buy an $80000 truck becuase it had alot of chrome. My first truck cost $18000 but had a rebuilt motor with all the paperwork and was a good solid truck. Made good money with it. Does not have to be pretty to pull freight

Don't know why you made a separate thread on Deregulation when you already posted one but the answers to your question was on it.
Truckers SCREAMED bloody murder for Deregulation in the Early 80's and they got it and everybody and their brothers jumped into it=Lower Rates. Were you given Permission to talk yet on Deregulation GMAN? :P :P

My goal is to keep my trucks and anyone elses trucks who will listen, loaded with good paying freight. We are not regulated to headhaul out and deadhead back. So we should get headhaul rates the whole time the truck is away from home. Also keeping a bunch of fingers out of the pie. A salesman shouldnt be telling a trucker how to run his truck.

You're the Captain of your Ship and you can have your Bottom Line that you won't haul under that Amount.
Unfortunately Deregulation brought about Cut Throat Freight hauling which is why I mentioned the Tom, Dick, and Harry thing. It's hard to fathom but there are some very wealthy Truck owners who went into Trucking for the Tax Right offs.
