Can't remember how much it cost but this would have been in the mid-late '60's.

Had to look Clarksville Tx up on google...dude, that's a small town
What you got against small towns??

Clarksville is on Hwy 82 (which of course, was Main St.) WE didn't live on Main, but an older Jewish couple that were members of our church DID. whenever my parents went out of town, I got to stay with THEM! The guest bedroom was on the front side of the house, overlooking the nice wraparound porch they had. Anyway, I would sleep with the windows open, and all night long I heard the JAKES of the trucks as they came into town and had to slow down a bit for a slight downhill and the lesser speed limit! I've never said that I "always" wanted to drive a truck..... but that memory has haunted me all my life!

Not sure if anyone ELSE would use the term bandalero, but that's basically what it was. Same as a "belt" holding 50 cal rounds for a machine gun. Anyway..... it had a narrow vertical glass door, where you could see all the cokes in their "sleeves" of the bandalero. You put in your money and pressed down on a lever. YOUR coke then moved into the slot where the EMPTY hole in the sleeve was, and you could pull it out. All the other slots had a type of "block" on them. The only sleeve you could pull the coke out of, was the one without the blocks. IF you opened the door to restock the machine, you would see a snakelike bandalero where you would put the NEW cokes into the empty slots (or sleeves.) Each "crank" of the lever MANUALLY forwarded the bandalero so that a FULL sleeve was in the slot you could remove it from. I HOPE I'm using the right term..... if not..... I'm SURE T.L. will gladly point out what an idiot I am when it comes to all things gun related!

Interesting things about this machine. Unlike today.... it carried ONLY the ONE product! There were NO digital displays telling you how much you put in, or that you got screwed because it was out of change or out of product. You could SEE if it had product before you put in your nickel and 2 pennies! I STILL can't get over a vending machine that TOOK (and returned) PENNIES!

A few years later, they raised the price to a DIME... (same machine) and a few years after that, they came out with the SAME type of machine that vended the 10 oz bottles of Coke.

Shortly after THAT, a Republican took office and coke AND gas prices skyrocketed! the World has never been the same SINCE!

[Sorry, just HAD to slip that in!]

I sometimes go through N.E. Texas, and see the signs for the various state roads that would take me to Clarksville from I-30.... but, I don't have a valid reason to go that far out of route! I really wish I could.... just ONCE.... I'd love to come into Clarksville on Hwy 82 from the west (Paris) and hit the jakes as I go by the house I spent so many wonderful nights in! Someday.... I MAY be an O/O.... and you bet your "bippy" I'll do what it takes to relive that moment!

For any of you who DO get to go through there (west to east,) the house was about 2 or 3 down, on the NORTH side of the road, from what USED to be a 7-Eleven (now probably a Mexican Carniceria!) and just as you start down the hill toward the Piggly Wiggly and the High School! Hit the jakes hard for me, will ya? And maybe even toot the airhorn! There may be a kid like ME in that front bedroom who will sleep better for knowing there is life OUTSIDE of that small town!

Sorry to hijak. Yes, TX makes some great BBQ and the best beef brisket in the world.

But Texans have no idea how to make PIZZA! I spent two weeks in Texas in 2002 and couldn't find a place that knew how to make a pizza! I flew back to Indy out of Houston. I was so happy to find a Pizza Hut that delivered to my hotel room. I asked for some "cheese sauce", the melted delicious nacho cheese so I could dip the crust. The gal on the other end of the phone thought I was some kind of freak and told me they don't have that.

I love Whataburger because it's the only place they have a pepper bar where I can put as many jalepanos or bannana peppers on my burger as I see fit.

Best burger I ever had: hole in the wall on US 85 in Amidon, ND. It was 12 years ago, don't remember the name but I remember the burger. Shouldn't be hard to find since there's less than 400 people in the entire county.
