I have heard from other drivers that 2 to 4 randoms a year is about average. I have had 2 randoms in about 10 months. I think the law states that all trucking companies have to test 10% of thier employees every month.

I have heard in some cases that one may have over 6 a year!! Is that possible?

Do the feds actually pick the employee numbers from each company or do the companys pick the employee numbers and provide them to the feds :?:

 

Just my personnel experience, Ive been with the same company 5yrs, havent had a "random" drug test, yet. Had one random breathalyser (sp) test in the 5yr period.
I would speculate that the company chooses the drivers for a random, not the DOT, just my guess.

 

We personally have a computer generated "lottery" I believe. They're really not a big deal. They just have you go to a clinic nearby and get it done.

Sure it's a hassel, but has to be done.

 

It is suppose to be a random sampling of the employee pool. Many companies use a computer program to choose which employees get tested.

If it is truly random there is the theoretical chance that you could be tested 12 times a year. Also the smaller the employee base the greater your chance of being selected. In addition to this some companies select a larger percentage than required.

Sometimes though it seems that employees in their first year of driving with a company have a greater chance of being "randomly" chosen.

 

I got picked 3 months in a row at one company I was at. I complained about it to my boss within earshot of the safety man (who had a well known dislike of me for embarrassing him in his safety meetings). He self righteously charged over to us and insisted it was a random computer program and that there was no way he could choose one driver with that program. I told him that my wife was a computer programer, and invited him to give me the program to let her see if there was a way to cheat the program. I even offered to bet him any amount of money he wanted that my wife would find a way to do what he insisted was impossible. He stomped away without taking me up on the offer, but I never got picked again. Must have just been a coincidence.

 

The Unigroup policy is that if you fail a drug test you are out for 3 years. If you complete a SAP, then its 18months, but you have to do 6 random tests in the 12 month period when you do get requalified.

Some companies might test some drivers more than others that they know are a "sure bet". I know this for a fact.

 

The best method to beating a drug test is to not use drugs. In the military it is random or can be directed. Usually if it is directed they already know the outcome, just have to do the formalities.

The question was who selects the employees, the feds or the company.

 

The number for random drug test is up to the SAP. The minimum number is 6 in 12 months but the SAP can require more.

An employer can select in addition to the required percentage any additional employees they want to tested. However, those additional employees can not be included in the required percentage by D.O.T.
