I hope you decide not to do it... How old are you btw?
Depends on what part of the country you're in and the market for drivers. In Reno where I live you can find plenty of local work right out of the CDL mill.

We need people that are paid a wage that is better than what was offered in 1985 for what we do. It might get some high school kids interested in engineering, draftsman or being a machinist. Kids now think about games and being able to sell there souls just to get them there next BMW. Blue collar jobs have been and are being outsourced and no one but the blue collar workers whine. Sad part is no one listens to us blue collar workers, they think we are lower than snake crap.
Currently I am in manufacturing and looking at driving for a change of pace. I am finding out that the hispanics are already here, and drove the pay down just like in construction in the early 90's and just like in manufacturing and that the wages have went down from the 1985 level of $20.00 an hour for an experienced machinist to $12.00 an hour and bilingual a plus.
Dam I really wanted to get into another career that might be fun and enjoyable but from what most everyone in here say's ..... IT AINT WORTH IT!!!!

Sean

Sean, unfortunately there are too many people in this country who want to receive a paycheck but don't want to perform. That is one thing which keeps wages down in some industries. It has also encouraged companies to move operations abroad. There is nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty, working in a factory or sweeping the floors. It is good meaningful work. Because so many people don't want to be considered blue collar, those types of jobs have been paying as much or more than many white collar jobs. Plumbers, electricians, etc., often make more than someone with more education who wears a tie every day. People keep demanding more and more for less and less work. That is one of the main reasons companies have been hiring so many Mexicans. People should be paid on how they perform. Those who want more money will need to perform at a higher level to do well. If an employee doesn't perform then they don't make as much money. That is the most fair way to work and earn a living. It is fair to the employee and fair to the employer.

As far as driving is concerned, some of us have been at this for a number of years. If we didn't enjoy it or earn an above average living, we would do something else. Today's drivers are very diverse. Many who drive do so because it is something that they enjoy. Don't worry about the naysayers. You will find those who don't enjoy their work in any profession. If it is something you want to do, then you should give it a try. It isn't easy being away from home, family and friends. Some can't cut it. Some do. By the way, not all Hispanics work for less than their American counterparts. Some may start out at lower paying jobs, but soon learn that they can earn more if they are willing to work hard. The problem many Americans have is that they think that they should start out at top wages without any skills or experience. Unless a worker has experience or skills, they have little value to a company.

If you dont any time behind the wheel, the go to Conway, they hire straight from cdl mills. Mostly because they cant keep drivers because the treat drivers (myself) like shit.

Actually, stay away from conway....
