San Francisco
I just got back from San Fran. OMG I have to give all of you that go there alot of credit. The freeway was fine but the city was terrible. That was some of the narrowest lanes, tightest turns I've ever had to drive a 53 footer. I've been in some tight spots but Dang. I'll go back if I have to but I really don't want to. I did get some good pictures though.

Yup. While waiting in line for Transformers at a theater up there a male couple walked by arms around each others shoulders. A sight as common in that city as the fog rolling in.
Speaking of driving in SF, ticketing delivery drivers is a major source of revenue for this "suburb of Bejing". Double parking even if only for a brief period while making a delivery is strictly prohibited and zealously enforced by the meter maids. UPS alone pays $400,000 a year in parking tickets for their drivers and simply accepts it as a cost of doing business in the city.

That area is where I learned to drive. My first trip into the city was with a 66 freightliner (LOOOONG wheelbase) no power steering and and 40' container delivering to the Sears on Geary Blvd.. then to a little tire store called J&J on Folsom street... I had to block three of the four lanes to make the delivery  The police really didnt care for that too much. There were other places to deliver to that were up in the famous hills. I missed one and had to try and go arond the block, when I tried to make the last right turn to get behind the store, the grade was so steep that the trailer hit the frame and about scared me to death! I had to back up, go to the next block, and try it again. Man that brings back memories!

One thing I learned quickly about deliveries in congested areas is if you can, park in a double left lane if possible. Sometimes I just set the brakes and 4 ways in my lane, stopping well short of any stop signs so 4 wheelers can still get around.

I go by it every night, one night I took a wrong exit and ended up lost in downtown with a '53 at 3am. I'm much more careful now, I ended up having to back up two full blocks to avoid a tunnel I was overheight for and then blind backing around a corner within an inch of a parked car to get out. I'm sure it made me a better driver and I lost five pounds in sweat that night but it's a lesson I'll never forget.

havent you learned anything from this board? you are supposed to just keep going, tear the top off your tractor and trailer and then say you didnt notice the tunnel
