Yea I used to have the same problem a Pres. Bush. I could not have left Texas for 6 months, and I was accused of sleeping (politically correct term) with women in Florida and California at the SAME time!! Go figure.

As for the correct topic, most companies with Qual Comm have the ability to disable the truck, under emergency or theft circumstances. Although, not one I know of has the ability or desire to disable a vehicle while it is in motion. The safety and legal ramifications of this would be outrageous. In the case of a stolen HazMat load, the location of the unit would have to be considered also. A terrorist (domestic or foreign) could cause just as much damage as if it was his/her intended target.

And yes, some companies have the ability to adjust governed speeds of the trucks. I am sure this could be used as punishment as well as safety concerns. I could have guaranteed you that Stevens had the ability to kill the cruise control on their trucks in specific areas. I do not know how many times on I - 35 South from Dallas and Hillsboro. Also occured in LA, at 0300 with no traffic to be found. Go figure.

Happy Fathers Day

Louis

Thank you guys for answering my question. Its just i am not any smarter now. Given the ABILITY for 9/11 incidents, OK. Just was hoping to hear from a guy who HAD his truck shut down because of trouble with HIS company he drives or drove for. Thanks you all and be safe!

Talked to saftey mgr today.
Yes they do have the system in place.
Yes they have done it, in the case of a truck that was stolen, however they waited till the truck was stoped and police were standing by.
however only the shop mgr and saftey mgr can do it.
And never when the truck is in motion. (unless ordered to by law enforcment).
So there it is for what it is worth.
Knight transport at least.

Most drivers know how to defeat/disable the satellite system.

I have to question the utility of the shutdown feature in a theft or worse scenario.

No difference than most of the "feel good programs" the government dreams up. They go around patting themselves on the back telling anyone what a great idea they dreamed up. Doesn't matter if it works or not.

Carriers with high-risk or high-value cargos can limit access to authorized drivers only and dispatchers can manage driver authentication codes and truck identifications, change codes over the air and even disable a moving vehicle, if necessary. Testing of Vehicle Command & Control for use with MAGTEC's M5K is in process, and commercial release is anticipated for Summer 2006.
