I myself like a galaxy, conex, or cobra 29 classic. I use a 29 everyday at work there good built radios. Take it to your nearest shop and have it peaked and tuned

Years ago I had a high powered Galaxy CB radio for my personal vehicle. I got out all over the world, it was great. I mounted it under the dash in a pull out bracket. So, I could take the radio in the house at night (so it wouldn't get stolen)...

I used a K40 magnet mount, with K40 Antenna. That way I could also take the antenna down, and in the house at night.

Ah, the good old days of yacking away on the CB...

Came in handy though when I needed directions from the big rig drivers, when I went on an adventure drive to NYC...

Here is what it comes down FOR ME in regards to CB radios.

I got the cheapest radio around. Bought it at a pawn shop 25 years ago, and since it still works, I dont need to upgrade, puts out the same 5 watts as any off the shelf radio today.

Think of the cb radio as a prehistoric version of a internet chatroom. For every 100 idiots on the radio, only one has anything of value to offer.
As far as knowing about accidents, if you are stuck in the back up on the interstate.........its either an accident or construction. Usually there are these big orange signs that tell you its construction and which lane to jump too. For accidents, turn on radio , and in between the "f*ck you's"
"faggot" and "n*gger" comments, you just might find out which lane is available and possible alternate route. Which really doesnt mean anything because usually the possible alternate routes are clogged up as well by the time you get to them.

As far as antennas go, I get continuous load antennas. The only thing I tune is the FM radio so I dont get tuneable antennas. I've done the SWR meter thing in the past, but it didnt improve the intelligence level coming through at optimum performance.

I dont turn on the radio at a truckstop and I dont turn it on while backing. Believe it or not there are people who will "assist" you backing into a spot via radio. But how do you know that this person, is anywhere near you. Some folks find it funny to intentionally screw up a person. Nothing beats
G.O.A.L (Get out and look). Dont trust anyone on a radio.

Then there are the morons who have to buy a mic that echoes. There is nothing so annoying than listening to someone who have these little toys on their mics. But the echo folks usually are so deep into the "lifestyle" that they can only interact using "cb lingo"

Insert echo noise
"There is a boogety boogey bear barelling down the b-ramp and his move meter is blazin to bust road rocket ronnies and his purple Peter Eater mud mover"

What I find hillarious is that there are alot of drivers who have all sorts of biblical quotes written on the side of their trucks yet will say the most vile and disgusting things on the radio.

Anyway, thats my feeling on the CB radio. Other than knowing what dock I need to be in at a shipper or receiver, any prolonged exposure to a cb radio will suck the gray matter from your brain.

I find it sad and revolting rather than hillarious. Shows the depth of their faith. Although maybe they bought the truck and just didn't take the stickers off. Naw--probably not.

I think one of the most irritating things on the radio is an operator who has echo and high power. He has both turned up on high so you can't understand what he is saying. When you keep asking him what he is saying, he gets upset with you because you can't understand him on your "cheap" radio. I think listening to someone with echo is very irritating. Just give me a simple radio that I can listen to and understand what is being said. 8)

If tuned correctly, echo does help with understanding people especially at greater distances. However, the vast majority of people with echo just crank it up and you cant understand a word they say.

As far as rudeness goes. I think it depends on where you are. I've never been out of the north east, so i don't know about elsewhere. In northern jersey, you'll hear nothing but cursing and yelling, guys with big radios and alot of echo but if you ask a question odds are you will get an accurate answer. On 495 in Mass. however the radio is usually quiet, and people are very helpful.

The key is not to get all worked up about it. Most drivers dont mind helping out, and then there are the a**holes. But thats life. As with anything else.
