Why do you need to talk to someone 50 miles away? I have had cb radios for years, in every vehicle I've owned, even when they were the old 23 channel cb radio/phone. I could talk around the country using "skip" (even got up to Alaska from California...on 5 watts) or upgrading to a SSB.

Now tell me the advantages of dumping money into a cb radio.

well i would want weather channels as well as a clear transmission/receive. i got an old radio from a ways back i should look for looks very similar to the cobra's

o.k. the reason i want to get out & hear long distance is.. one day while coming up on a 10 mile backup due to construction. a driver directed me to detour around it. he was 7 miles away. i never saw the driver. he directed me for 15 -20 min. if it werent for my big radio i could never have kept in contact & got around that backup.

Big Radios may be good in that situation, but 99.9% of the time they are a nuisance. There has been many a time when trying to hear someone give/get directions or tell about a back-up, accident, lane closure, etc. and there is some super trucker with a big radio, 20 miles away on a different totally different roadway talking about their latest conquest or harrassing another driver.

Not directed at you, so do not get me wrong!
1.Turn the linear off in the trucks stops, there is no reason for that!
2. If you want to carry on a conversation, get off the community channel(19)
3. Have some courtesy, big radio mentality, oh I don not care what you are talking about, my radio will talk over yours.
4. CB Etiquette, somewhere there was a well made website about it, I will try to find it and post the link.
5. If you want to talk around the world, do the work and get a HAM License. It just takes some study, and pass the test. Then you can legally chat at 1500 watts on certain bands.

Again, a box stock Cobra, Midland, Ranger, etc. can talk 8 -15 miles with the correct antenna, coax and tuning.

1500 wats in a kicker is still not leagl even with a ham lic. and a 45 watt 10 meter radio is still no big radio. Just bigger than the small cobras you guys love so much!!!!

Let's see, according to the FCC regs - maximum PEP allowed on 160,40,20,15,12, and 10 meters is 1500 watts PEP, although, it states, the maximum transmitting power an amateur station may use, is the maximum power necessary to carry out the desired communications. All frequency's available to a General Class Licensee (KE5MWP).


My 23 year old Midland 77-250 Power Max, in my current work truck, shows a 4.5 watt dead key and 12 watt swing, Legal Factory Box Stock. The cover has only been off to blow the dust out and keep the circuits from frying. Matched to a 4 ft Firestick and high quality coax it typically gets out 10 -12 miles without bleeding over to other frequencies.

I have a 148GTL that has been tweaked and had updated finals (before I got it) and it does not put out or recieve near as well as the Midland.

looks like i shook a hornets nest with this one. i cant find my old one but i have one out in the Ford ill take a look at it. so far everyone has been saying connex, galaxy, cobra, or even try a marine type CB.

what exactly is a leaner??
