I am a fan of Uniden Radios. Depending on how many bells and whistles you want go with either the PC68 or the 78. Couple either one with a quality noise canceling mic and a good antenna and you will have a radio that will do the job and then some.

If you just want a simple basic radio, the Cobra 19 is a good radio, as is the Cobra 29. As Uturn mentioned, Uniden also makes a good radio. I bought a Uniden last time. It is a good radio. You should be able to buy any of the radio's lists for around $100 or less, depending on what extras you want on the radio.

Magnum S-380 ... $220
Fatboy straight 4-pill ... $375
30' of 6 gauge welding power cable ... $50

Being able to shut down 19 for a 2 mile radius, at will ... PRICELESS

Oh to answer your question Cobra 29 or Uniden 78 should work fine.

Believe me 2 miles is all you need when you're sitting in a hellhole like W. Memphis.

VHF? No way...

I would think you would have a HAM in your truck for the places you run!!!
Does GPS work in your neck of the woods or is it just a white screen all the time?

The general lee is a great radio with some decent power if it's properly peaked and tuned. I own one, and it's by far the best radio I've ever owned. I still use it everyday. You might have a hard time finding one. They are really difficult to get these days. I've owned Connex,Galaxy 959, Cobra 148GTL, Texas Ranger, etc. The general lee gets my vote for quality and performance with the money you spend. It's basically the same radio as the Connex 3300. Connex would be my second choice if money is of no concern to you. Good luck!

You can get a $35.00 Cobra at WalMart. It puts out the same 5 watts like all the rest. Anything else is just bells, whistles and bullsh*t.

Never understood the whole idea of putting hundreds into a CB , antenna and linear set-up. Still the same bunch of idiots on the cheap radios as there are on the expensive set ups.
