On the occasions I do get some free time and I am nearby something i usualy try and go find myself a local pub or sportsbar or something along those lines to watch a ball game or hear some music or just generaly socialize with other humans for a bit, talking to yourself gets old after a while. I only do this provided that I have time to still get some good sleep and recovery time for a day or so...dont wanna hit the road drunk. If that fails, i watch a movie or hit a Wal-Mart....You can kill lotrs of time at a walmart just strolling around window shopping, lets you get your legs stretched and exercised a bit as well.

Default I'd Rather Be At The Races

When I was an owner-operator (1973-82), I watched short-track racing everywhere. Without transportation by truck, I would never have seen racing at tracks such as Granite City, Santa Fe (Hinsdale, IL), and Winchester. As a company driver I also used the boss' truck to visit events such as The National Antique Truck Show (1996) at Dana Proving Grounds, Ottawa Lake, Michigan. You must plan ahead for these events.

I have gone to minor league baseball games all over the country. It's great baseball, and you can get right in the stadiums and usually get a good seat, too........all except Louisville, KY.

Default Baseball

When I was leased to Key Line Freight (1973-1978), they paid the motel bills. In St. Louis, we had a choice between the Milner or the Lenox hotels. One of them had a swimming pool on the roof of the parking garage. I always packed a swim suit. The hotels were within walking distance of the ball park and the river front. That is the only time that I have seen professional baseball. While walking to a tavern that was on a barge tied to the river bank, we noticed a horse tied among the girders of a bridge. In the bar, a policeman was watching the world series on TV. We asked whether that was his horse. He said, "Yes. I didn't think anyone could see him." Free time was more recreational in those days when the company paid the hotel bills and the hotels operated courtesy vans. The St. Louis hotels also served railroad, airline and bus employees.

On one of my first trips to San Luis Obispo, I had a load that picked up a couple hours after my morning costco delivery, so I headed south and parked along the coast. It was breathtaking and I even saw a whale (it was april)

unless you drive illegal it don't matter what company you drive for ...there is plenty of time in the day to do things as you have a 10 hr break if driving legal after driving out your 11/14...you have free time while getting loaded /un loaded ....and almost all loads have extra time on them so shutting down a couple times a week for about 12 hrs is almost always possible i made 2800-3200 miles weekly and was rested while hitting the weights 4-5x weekly 2 of those work outs took 2 hrs ...it is possible to waste time and leave your self no time to do anything other than drive/sleep....i constantly hear drivers say they don't have time to shower...sleep...do laundry...and many of these drivers were not even running 2k miles ....i ran 2800-3k managed a daily shower and everything else above plus lifting weights and i don't mean holding onto a pair of whispy 30 lb dumbells i mean a full on workout with more pundage than my fleet manager would ever want to know i had in my truck...
