Spicer used to sell in the US and TTC (Tranmission Technologies Corporation) still sells in Mexico, 14, 16 and 18 speed transmissions that used a base "5" gear pattern like the Super 10 but had a four position splitter button instead of the two position on the Super 10.
On the 14 speed, you split gears 1-3 twice and gears 4-5 four times to get a total of 14 ratios. On the 16 speed, it was the opposite, you split gears 1-3 four times and gears 4-5 twice to get a total of 16 ratios. On the 18 speed, it was the same as the 16 speed except you split 4th gear four times instead of just twice. Each transmission offered 4 reverse ratios.

I hate super 10's, personally. I had to drivers tell me how much easier a Super 10 is to a Straight 10.
You can still skip shift the lower gears with a straight 10 and you only have to split once going up and once going down. But to each their own.

What it boils down to is this:
It's a 5 speed, and each speed that is selected with the lever can be split lo or hi with the air shift button, for a total of 10 usable ratios. (It's the same as driving a truck that has a 5 speed transmission and a 2 speed rear axle)

Boy.... A super 10 is one of the easiest transmissions you'll ever drive. to me, It's like a simpler version of the 18 speed.
Just think, it's not nearly as hard to learn as say, a MaxiDyne 2 stick system or the old, (and personally hated) Quadruplex.

Personally The Mack Quadruplex is my favorite transmission of all time.

To each his own, I guess.
Personally The Mack Quadruplex is my favorite transmission of all time. MaxiDyne.... no problem.... It's self explanitory. To me, the Quadruplex needed a 200 page manual and the driver needed 3 arms. My dad had an old DM that had one in it. I used to get a kick out of watching him shift one with his right hand while shifting the other with his left arm through the steering wheel.. HILARIOUS... Definitely not for a one armed man.. |
