So in another month I will have been driving for a year. I have come to realize that there is a lot of hype in this business. I had planned to go O/O after two years but it seems from some of the CB chatter that no one is making the huge money of days gone by. Is this true? I notice a lot of the print ads and job opening don't talk about huge money any more either, except for a few and they are on the east coast.
Is it just better to remain a company driver and try and get with a good company? I drive for USXpress out of Colton, CA. 11 western/dedicated. Grossed $30k in 8 months. Not bad for first year but I need to double that next year.

Look into something specialized and/or labor intensive like HHG, Cars, Tankers, Flatbedding/Heavy Haul. There is good money to be made if you combine a CDL with some other skill, just driving a van for OTR for a McMegacarrier you will be hard pressed to ever earn much north of $60k. Local work could be a viable option as well.

Getting more mile is the right answer. Getting more pay for the miles you drive is another solution... Looking for a higher paying job is your best solution. Word to the wise, though....just because someone tell you they pay more, doesn't mean you will make more. I also would see if their are things you can do to increase your pay.....being a trainer....or even recruiting drivers...(that hurt). Stuff like that. Good luck with you.
